Steph Curry just signed a HUGE deal with Li-Ning and reportedly turned down bigger cash offers from other brands, marking an end to his legendary run with Under Armour.
At first glance, this might seem surprising. But when you look at it through a wealth-building lens, it actually makes a lot of sense. Steph Curry, who infamously rejected Nike on his first shoe deal after they misspelled his name on their PowerPoint, has never been afraid of going against the grain.
Curry kept full ownership of Curry Brand when he parted ways with Under Armour last year. This new deal with Li-Ning isn’t just him becoming another endorser. It’s Li-Ning partnering with and powering his brand.
The partnership includes basketball footwear and apparel, athleisure, a full golf line, and — most importantly — the ability for Curry to sign other athletes under the Curry Brand umbrella. They’re also planning to open Curry Brand stores in both the US and China.
This gives him significantly more control and long-term upside than a traditional high-dollar endorsement deal.
Instead of maximizing the short-term check, he’s focused on building and scaling an asset he actually owns and controls.
A big guaranteed contract is income.
Building your own brand with real ownership and distribution is an asset that can continue creating value long after your playing career ends.
This deal also gives him strong access to the massive and growing Chinese market through Li-Ning, while still allowing Curry Brand to grow in the US and globally. That combination of control + scale is hard to get in a standard endorsement deal with a bigger Western brand.
At the end of the day, Steph is choosing ownership and long-term leverage over the biggest short-term number.
Steph Curry chose assets over wages.
Congrats to Brooklyn Eubanks on being selected to the exclusive @UANextGHoops Future 60 Camp being held at IMG Academy on June 5-7th‼️ As one of the top guards in Texas’ 27’ class- Super deserved..
