On 23 August 2026, Monk Barsanuphius (Turyansky) was killed during an attack on the Holy Dormition Sviatohirsk Lavra. Two others, Monk Gregory and Andriy Kiriyenko, were seriously wounded. The monastery officially confirmed the attack by unidentified persons. A survivor later said that three men in military-style clothing demanded a pro-Ukrainian response; after he answered, “Glory to our Lord God,” the assault began.

Medical information subsequently reported that Barsanuphius suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the head and neck. Despite the brutality of the case, it has so far received very limited to no attention from major Western international media, while Orthodox and Ukrainian outlets have reported extensively on it. This tragedy comes amid a much wider persecution against the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC).

The US is not paying Iran anything under this deal, and the people who keep saying this like @ChrisMurphyCT -- or, worse, who are saying that the US is paying Iran $300 billion, like @amyklobuchar -- are outright lying.

The money that flows to Iran's is Iran's money: that the US froze and refused to give back but will now release under the deal. The $300b is the maximum Iran can get. That's not from the US or from Americans, but from a private fund financed by the Persian Gulf dictatorships and their oligarchs.
