Ireland’s housing system is in disrepair, largely due to ineffective government policies to regulate short-term letting on platforms such as Airbnb and Booking. com.
My graphic shows 21,913 entire homes listed on Airbnb’s short-term letting platform in Ireland. Within Ireland’s Gaeltacht areas in Cork, Donegal, Galway, Kerry, Meath, Mayo, and Waterford, there are 6,201 entire-home Airbnb listings.
These properties, alongside thousands of long-vacant holiday homes owned by wealthy investors for short-term rentals, are forcing native Irish speakers out of their communities. The resulting housing squeeze has left seasonal workers, including waiters, bar staff, chefs, and musicians, unable to find accommodation. In the midst of a housing crisis, a record 17,548 people, including 11,944 adults and 5,604 children, are accessing state-funded emergency accommodation across Ireland.

Israel flattened Beirut in 1982.
No Hamas. No Hezbollah. No October 7 to point to then.
Just 17,000 dead Lebanese and Palestinian civilians.
Even US president then Ronald Reagan, who armed Israel, called Begin furious after seeing a photo of a 7-month-old baby with its arms blown off and said “It is a holocaust”.
They killed so many innocent people that the survivors had no choice but to pick up weapons.
Then Israel had the audacity to keep using “Self-Defense” excuse every decade.
Israel didn’t stumble into endless war. Israel built it. Brick by brick.
Own it.

🎉🎉 Another record broken by @FineGael & @fiannafailparty well Done, I'm sure the REITs investors will be extremely happy with your work #HousingCrisis
Israel is the first state in history to legislate a death sentence that applies only to one ethnic group.
There's a reason nobody has ever done this.
It's a depth of evil beyond humanity itself.
The fridge is on, but there’s no one home.😡
The CSO in Q4 2024 has classified 70,149 dwellings (including holiday homes) as vacant, based on low electricity consumption of around 2 kWh per day (enough to power a medium-sized fridge for a day).
It’s crazy that this is tolerated in the middle of a housing crisis, with yet another record of over 17,308 people in emergency accommodation last month, including 5,457 children. Plus, the Simon Community estimate as many as 290,000 people in Ireland are likely to be experiencing hidden homelessness, as friends or family are increasingly relied upon to provide accommodation for others. Hidden homelessness refers to individuals without a secure, permanent home who are not visible on the streets or in official statistics, often "couch-surfing," sharing overcrowded housing, or staying in squats.
This is not normal and cannot be accepted. We need urgent action to prevent evictions and expand housing supply, and we can start by utilising these vacant houses.
After all, it was called a 'national emergency' by Leo Varadkar back in 2018, when the homeless figure was 10,000.

Just a gentle reminder that landlords do not provide housing, they just profit off something that you need to live a full life. #HousingCrisis
Ireland needs more landlords 'that have five or more houses who treat it like a business' https://t.co/oOPWOaS6G0
