A black woman from Kenya disappeared in the UK and was found dead in a body of water.
Barely anyone reported on it.
No one is saying her name.
She’s being forgotten.
Melissa is doing incredible work to raise awareness about cases no one else will report on.
I'm so glad I was able to read this article this morning. It speaks to so many neglected issues. Even in CC or disabled spaces, ableism towards people with intellectual disabilities is rampant. We should never allow ourselves to be convinced to abandon people or sideline them...
Y'all don't for a second think about how that could be used by a fascist state and it shows. In telling people "Tourette's isn't an excuse for bigotry", you ironically center white people with Tourette's before ever questioning what the rest of us are going through.
@twitchyspoonie Yeah it does seem like black TS folks like yourself and shay have been getting more than a double whammy of hate throughout all this. I try to center folks at the intersections during times like this, but I also worry about the increased scrutiny and pressure on you all.
@twitchyspoonie I hope they do. The instinct to think about white folks first in any situation is something we’re all conditioned for and is something we need to challenge in order to dismantle white supremacy. Did I understand your point right?
@twitchyspoonie Yeah this whole situation definitely brought out the white supremacists and eugenicists of any background, gleefully antagonizing both sides into attacking each other, rather than the BBC.
@EffieDeansGruel@twitchyspoonie An Arby’s near me still has a pickup location in the store. I can’t use the drive thru, but I can just go in, pick up the food, and leave without ever interacting with someone.
@twitchyspoonie@EffieDeansGruel I like using the app so it minimizes how much I have to interact with the people. I’m also hard of hearing, so apps are more accessible.
It just sucks that my Popeyes says I can’t use the drive thru if I use the app, so I don’t go there much anymore.
Amazon MGM Studios which is valued at almost $10 billion is releasing a movie about He-Man this year which will easily make millions of dollars. Meanwhile, the literal creator of the character, who without him that movie wouldn’t even exist, has to rely on a GoFundMe for his medical care. Fucking insane.
@BRATZULA I've been thinking about how common it is for kids to whisper swear words or slurs to kids with Tourette's, knowing the kid with Tourette's will take the fall. In this case, John already had this tic, but it felt like fundamentally the same thing.
Hey, just a PSA: please don't call things tics when they're not.
Tics are not: - bad habits
- voluntary & normal facial expressions
- using words like "like" & "um" a lot
- quirks
I have Tourette's & using "tic" like this makes it hard for me to communicate my tics to others.
trust that they know when to step away from that role of mediator (for lack of a better term), and to not bother people at the intersections who aren’t readily offering up their perspective? Hmm I’m not sure…
Poor Shay. It’s important to uplift those folks who exist at the intersections at times like this, but also it places a heavy burden on them, so sometimes I worry if we’re burning out these voices with our own ignorance. I don’t really know how to reconcile this, maybe
A lot of people have been sharing and responding to Shay Amamiya’s videos (she is a Black internet creator with Tourette’s) and she posted this today because of how much her words have been twisted/used to further fan flames/create harassment towards her, and it is affecting her mentally.
