The UN Human Rights Office welcomes the adoption by @ASEAN of a landmark regional declaration on the right to a healthy environment that marks a vital step forward as the first regional affirmation of the right to a healthy environment across Southeast Asia.
The High Commissioner for Human Rights @volker_turk calls on ASEAN Member States to build on the declaration to ensure coordinated leadership & timely action toward addressing transboundary environmental harms, such as climate change, land, water & air pollution, with the meaningful participation of the most affected, including women, young people, & Indigenous Peoples. He also emphasized the particular need to ensure the effective protection of environmental human rights defenders & their essential work.
