I thank the Hon. Jonard Asiimwe, Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation for a very successful maiden visit to Makerere University. The Minister toured hundreds of innovations and interacted with the students and innovators, and he m encouraged them to do more.

Today, I embark upon the second and final day of my technical and scientific mission at Makerere University, with our focus turning to one of the most consequential frontiers of Uganda’s development: the conversion of scientific knowledge into solutions that preserve life, strengthen public health and create economic value. Our focus will be on biomedical research, genomics, diagnostics, infectious diseases, One Health, medical technologies, technology translation and enterprise development because a nation cannot secure its future by perpetually importing answers to problems its own scientists have the capacity to solve.

As Uganda advances towards its ambitious national transformation agenda, our universities must not remain detached from the productive machinery of national development. They must be laboratories of discovery, engines of technological sovereignty and launchpads for enterprises built on home-grown intellectual capital. I am therefore here to challenge, connect and catalyse the ecosystem so that research does not end in journals, but crosses the threshold into laboratories, clinics, industries and markets, where knowledge becomes innovation, innovation becomes enterprise, and enterprise becomes national prosperity.

Tomorrow, the Hon. Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation, Hon. Eng. Jonard Asiimwe Akiiki, will commence a two-day official visit to @Makerere University.

The strategic engagement will convene researchers, innovators, academia, and industry leaders to discuss research infrastructure, emerging technologies, enterprise creation, and the translation of health and life sciences research into innovation, industry, and national development.

The visit underscores the Ministry's commitment to strengthening collaboration between academia, research, industry, and Government in advancing Uganda's science, technology, and innovation agenda.

On 21st and 22nd July 2026, I will engage the Makerere University community not merely as an emissary of government, but as an advocate for a future anchored in science, technology and innovation. This engagement reaffirms that Uganda’s prosperity will be secured not by resources alone, but by intellect, rigorous research and transformative innovation. Makerere’s legacy positions it as a strategic hub for converting knowledge into technologies, enterprises and national value.

Together with university leaders, researchers, scientists, innovators and students, I will explore pathways to accelerate commercialization, technology transfer and talent development. Science must move beyond laboratories into industries, jobs and improved livelihoods. Through collaboration, execution and innovation, we shall build an ecosystem where STI becomes the foundation of Uganda’s transformation and sustainable prosperity for generations through purposeful partnerships and shared national ambition for all.

Today, I shared something I deeply believe.

HE. @KagutaMuseveni did not support @AfriCoffeePark because it is in Ntungamo. If this project were in Karamoja, Gulu, Arua, Mbale, or any other corner of Uganda, I have no doubt he would have supported it just the same. The support has always been about one person the Ugandan farmer.

For too long, we have looked at transformative projects through the lens of geography, politics, or personalities. It's time we looked at them through the lens of national progress.

Uganda will not be built by outsiders. Uganda must be built by Ugandans who choose to believe in Uganda. Every factory we build, every farmer we empower, every young person we employ, and every value-added product we export is a victory for all of us not for one district or one company.

I thank Hon. @EngJonard for visiting @InspireAfrica_ today and for standing with a vision that belongs to every Ugandan.

When we stop asking "Who owns it?" and start asking "How does it grow Uganda?", we will unlock the future our country deserves.

The Hon. Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation, Eng. Jonard Asiimwe Akiiki, together with the STI Secretariat team, has been received at the Banana Industrial Research and Development Centre in Bushenyi District by Dr. Florence Muranga and the Centre's leadership.

The visit forms part of the Ministry's continued engagements with science, technology, and innovation institutions to assess progress, strengthen research commercialization, and support home-grown innovations that add value to agricultural products, create jobs, and accelerate Uganda's industrial transformation.

I conclude the third day of my Western Corridor STI Mission at the Presidential Initiative on Banana Industrial Development (PIBID) and the Banana Industrial Research and Development Centre (BIRDC) in Nyaruzinga, Bushenyi, with renewed conviction that Uganda's industrial future lies in the intelligent application of science to our natural endowments. I engaged the Centre's leadership, scientists, researchers, engineers, innovators, technical staff and banana outgrowers, inspected the processing plant and assessed the Industrial Technology Park's water supply infrastructure—an indispensable foundation for research, innovation, agro-industrialisation and sustainable production. From patented Tooke innovations, including instant matooke flour, bakery-grade flour and banana fibre technologies for textiles, I witnessed science translating agricultural potential into industrial value.

This is the model of development Uganda must relentlessly scale: research that becomes intellectual property, innovation that becomes industry, and agriculture that becomes wealth. Every factory powered by science and supported by resilient infrastructure strengthens farmer incomes, expands markets, creates dignified employment and advances our march towards a US$500 billion economy by 2040. Our responsibility is to accelerate commercialisation, protect innovation and ensure that every scientific breakthrough translates into measurable national prosperity. #WesternCorridorSTI #STIUganda #UgandaAtWork
