#NYR GM Chris Drury on the defense makeover:
"It definitely was a priority. I think just the ability to move the puck, to get the puck out of our zone, to get it through the neutral zone, to get it to our forwards in all three zones was a priority. We looked at a lot of different options in a lot of different areas through this retool and identified that as one that we really wanted to address. Moved pieces around and did a number of different things to kind of reshape the D core."
Easy to ignore analysis of the Rangers last week that essentially amounts to “i knew this guy’s name and i don’t know this guy so the rangers aren’t any better”
I’ve been as critical as Drury as anyone. He addressed the two biggest areas of need imo this offseason. Generating offense from the backend has been this team’s biggest struggle even when it was making playoff runs.
Team is significantly better than last year and has a much deeper pool of young assets. Pretty remarkable turnaround. Not a single awful long term deal either in this rising cap era
I’m still seeing Drury slander. Some of you need to just take the L and move on with your lives. Hard to argue against anything he’s done the past week*
* no comment on the trade this morning
It's not that the rangers traded assets for a overpriced backup goalie locked in at multiple years. It's that they traded for a BAD overpriced goalie locked in at multiple years.
Most CEOs are way too media trained
They end up sounding like corpo bots in interviews
It’s so much better to just talk how you talk. You’re allowed to have a personality
Everyone is scared to say something “wrong” but, generally, tedium and irrelevance are far greater risks
"Calling Real Young and Lazy Horse a tribute band is like describing Neil Young as 'a weird guy who’s into harmonica solos' — technically not inaccurate, but nowhere near adequate."

Ah yeah take the lower ceiling, older prospect who is more pro ready for a team devoid of offensive talent, who maybe if everything goes right can be a wild card team. Those guys usually end up having lower floors than you’d think, and it’s a short-sighted use of a premium pick
I have watched none of these prospects but based on every available scouting report Smits is the worst pick the Rangers could make at 5. Nonsensical! So of course they will.
Troy is plenty similar to other Hudson River towns that are both past their industrial prime and having a resurgence. There’s more than one place to get natural wine, there’s artisanal ice cream, a show venue, etc. Every hallmark of cutesy river town but it’s also much larger
Washington Park Brownstones in Troy are ~ $1 million, Troy has the largest farmers market in the Northeast and a vibrant college. There’s like 6 great coffee shops in downtown Troy.
Troy in upstate NY has beautiful brownstones that are often abandoned. I saw a toothless guy in rags who I thought was homeless grab his key and unlock the door to go inside. They're so affordable people can afford brownstones but not teeth
Star QB Brendan Sorsby is applying to enter the NFL Supplemental Draft, sources tell NFL Network.
After legal wrangling about his NCAA eligibility, Sorsby — regarded as a first-round talent — now could be the highest-drafted supplemental pick in decades.
I worked at a local queens paper, made $30k, and the job didn’t offer any health care. Very happy to see the lifeblood of these vital community newspapers stand up and fight for these critical jobs
Let's go Schneps reporters!! The incredibly hardworking journalists at Schneps-owned pubs are offered horrible health-insurance & salaries as low as ~$40K. We are so lucky to have them covering NYC despite these conditions. Congrats to the new union!

I guess it’s all substacks these days but such a bummer places like the hairpin don’t exist anymore, where you could write about something you talk about it with your friends and get it edited by one of the most talented writers/editors in the world
