For such a historic weekend, The Boys had to bring in the big guns as the Box Office Daddy himself @ScottMendelson joins to help breakdown the massive opening weekend for #Backrooms, how obsessed audiences are with #Obsession, and is #StarWars dead?

@kylebuchanan Come on. You know what people mean. There’s an obvious difference btwn the first adaptation of this YouTube video and the billionth version of Star Wars, Transformers, Ghostbusters, TMNT, Marvel comics, etc. Backrooms is new to cinema IP vs old shit that’s been done to death.
@superchickcharg Totally, there could be a Star Wars movie that works on its own merits, but the brand itself is no longer a guarantee— that’s the issue. And Andor might be a “great” show, but it’s not a movie. As a movie brand, Star Wars feels pretty cooked beyond them doing a Vader movie.
Man, that Gosling Star Wars movie might truly tank at the B.O. next year. I know he’s a bigger star than anyone in Mando and it’s not based off an out of gas streaming show but still, Star Wars has never felt more like a joke than it does now.
@edgewalker81 Hahaha, oh I saw them all opening day at the Ziegfeld. Bad to mediocre movies but they all were still big cultural moments and huge hits. Mando and Grogu is gonna bomb but worse, people just don’t give a shit anymore. Star Wars is for old fogeys only.
I’ve been covering new releases on a weekly basis for 10 years. In 2018 we began talking about the teenage boy IP era as an analog for westerns, big-budget musicals, and blockbuster comedies. They’re waves that rise high and crash over time. This is a new wave. I welcome it.
A decade’s worth of very wise grown-ups: “Movie theaters are obsolete and entirely out of sync with the entertainment habits of today’s kids.”
Today’s kids: “Go fuck yourselves!”
The blockbuster summer movie as we know it is dead. RIP IP. The most talked about movies of the summer are two low budget indie films—OBSESSION and BACKROOMS.
Not sequels. Not spinoffs. Not reboots. OGs.
Movies are back, baby. This is the way.
The Boys are here to preview just how big #Backrooms will open, if #TheMandalorinandGorgu will bust, and if audiences keep being obsessed with #Obsession!
