Interesting tidbit from Supreme Court’s analysis of the importance of swift approval of requests for public records: The decision cited a Drake Law Review analysis written 10 years ago by Brenna Findley, now Brenna Bird, who is Iowa atty gen and an ally of the governor.

Important clarification: The Iowa court rules’ definition of “news media” only applies to people wanting to use cameras, audio recorders, laptops or smart phones inside courtrooms. Anyone, journalists included, can use a notepad/pen in court w/out having to seek permission.

If gov’t officials can fire an employee for making public records available to the public, that guts effectiveness of the records law. Release of public records should NOT hinge on whether they might be embarrassing or politically detrimental to a governor, mayor, other official.
