The Latoon bush is a monument to the small farmers that once populated the west, who lived hard but self-sufficient existences with little materially but unparalleled cultural riches. It is a monument to an Irish people and their fireside culture often mocked, people looked down on as backward, people to be pitied for their poverty - people who never looked at themselves as such. Quiet, unpretentious custodians of our folk inheritance. They are my heroes and this is a fitting monument to them.

When I was a child despite decades of mockery and shame heaped on folk belief from most official quarters, there was an abundance of folklore and folk custom alive in the west of Ireland. With the assault on Tara coming only a few years after saving the Latoon fairy bush, this was a terrific win for culture, heritage and folklore in the midst of the Celtic Tiger consumerist mania that is now utterly ascendant in its rootless, culturally Anglo-American globalist final form. At Latoon, the auld lads managed to put a kink in that plan.

The Latoon fairy bush win makes me proud to be a Clare man and it makes me proud of my father.
