🧛‍♂️ The Dracula Connection
Bran Castle is often called “Dracula’s Castle,” though the link is more legend than fact. Bram Stoker, the Irish author of Dracula (1897), never visited Romania—but his gothic novel, told through letters and diaries, introduced Count Dracula as a mysterious nobleman from Transylvania who spreads terror in England.
Stoker was inspired by historical accounts of Vlad the Impaler, a 15th-century Wallachian ruler known for his brutal punishments. Crucially, he drew from the writings of Armin Vambéry, a Hungarian historian and traveler, whose vivid tales of Eastern European folklore and Vlad’s cruelty helped shape the vampire myth.
So while Vlad likely never lived in Bran Castle, its haunting silhouette and dramatic location made it the perfect stand-in for Dracula’s fictional lair. A real fortress wrapped in gothic fiction. 🏰🦇
