When Jesus called the fishermen, it ended with them “pulling up their boats, leaving everything, and following him.” When Jesus called the tax collector, it ended with him “leaving everything, getting up, and following him.” Luke 5. Is our story ending the same way?

“I urge you, brothers, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Spirit, to join me in my struggle by praying to God for me“ (Romans 15:30). If the Paul felt the need for the prayers of other believers, how much should we? Let’s continue in this way during quarantine.

“Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves... Share with God’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality” (Romans 12:10-13). Covid-19 is a time for us to shine in this. Let’s each ask God precisely how.

“Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ” (Romans 11:17). Amidst a time of many unknowns and variations, let’s make one thing a constant: filling our ears with God’s Word.

“We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express.” (Romans 8:26). The quarantine is getting old, but praise God that his involvement in our lives never does.

“Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand” (Romans 5:1-11). Absolutely nothing to add.

“ Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness… Jesus was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification” (Romans 4). Here is the WHAT, and WHAT HAPPENS, when we listen/respond to what God says about Himself and us.

”For we maintain that a person is justified by faith apart from observing the law” (Romans 3:28). Quarantine brings out both the best and worst conduct in society. Above both is the provision of God: Jesus’ holiness and sacrifice - given to those who know they need it.

“They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped created things rather than the Creator” (Romans 1:25). We’re just as prone to this in 2020 as they were in antiquity. Maybe the quarantine can be a blessing to help us trade back.

“For in the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last” (Romans 1:17). Just as it was God who rolled away the stone (not us), it is God who makes us righteous (not us). We simply welcome His work and live in it.

“This is my son, who my love. Listen to him!“ (Mark 9:7). There’s a lot of options of who to listen to these days, and most of them contradict each other. 🤷‍♂️. Let’s make sure that before all others we’re listening to this voice.

“If anyone would come after me, he must DENY himself, TAKE UP his cross, and FOLLOW me” (Mark 8:34). Not a lot of wiggle room in this statement. Let’s ask God to help us do this daily.

“How great is your goodness, which you have stored up for those who fear you” (Psalm 31:19). One stores up something with the intent to use it one day when necessary. Let’s ask God to help us to revere Him, and to use some of His supply of good things on us today.

“I keep asking...” (Ephesians 1:17-23). What does Paul ask God to give us? Two things: that we may know God better; that we may know the hope to which he has called us ( a glorious inheritance, and a great power). Let’s let quarantine be an incubator for this prayer.

“See a king will reign in righteousness... For the fool speaks folly, his mind is busy with evil... The scoundrel’s methods are wicked, he makes up evil schemes...” (Isaiah 32:1-8). Stressful times highlight the distinction between God/godless. Let’s keep God as the King of us.

“ These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. They worship me in vain; their teachings are but rules taught by men“ (Isaiah 29:13). Our Covid-19 disrupted schedules and structures are not so much the issue, but rather our hearts.

“As soon as they got out of the boat, people recognized Jesus. They ran throughout that whole region and carried the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was… And all who touched him or healed” (Mark 6:53-56). Are we running?

“For this is a people without understanding; so their Maker has no compassion on them, and their Creator shows them no favor” (Is. 27:11). God is benevolent and very gracious; but a perpetually stubborn and unseeking heart can eventually exhaust His patience. Let’s not do that!

“You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast, because he trusts in you“ (Isaiah 26:3). How, in turbulent times, do we get a mind that is steadfast? By filling it with something steadfast: God’s person and promises. p.s. We find that information in God’s word.

“O Lord, you are my God; I will exalt you and praise your name, for in perfect faithfulness you have done marvelous things, things planned long ago” (Isaiah 25:1). “Stay home-Stay safe” falls under this promise. Let’s ask God to show us the marvelous part.
