Tiger Meg was spayed on April 26 at PAWS' Pat Derby Animal Wellness Center – she recovered well and was back to her cheerful, active and hungry self the next morning. PAWS Director of Veterinary Services Dr. Jackie Gai oversaw the surgery, performed by Dr. Margo Mehl, DACVS, and her team from San Francisco Animal Medical Center, who generously donated their services. PAWS’ animal care and veterinary staff were on hand to assist. This surgery benefits captive tigers by preventing reproduction as well as cancers of the reproductive tract that are common in intact big cats. Big thanks to Dr. Mehl and her team!

Science is critical to understanding, protecting, and conserving wildlife populations. A new paper sheds light on the importance of older individuals to the survival of their species – from elephants to lions, whales, and fish – through essential ecological knowledge, reproduction, and immunity against disease. Policies are needed to protect elder animals and the knowledge they impart. Read about the paper below.
