Epstein says managers going into the last year of their contract without a renewal on deck is more common in today's game. He still needs to talk to Joe and will discuss it when the time is right.

Javy is one of the guys who has the killer instinct and edge and brings it everyday. He also provides the toughness that teammates like and rally around. Epstein doesn't think he gets enough credit for being a team-first guy.

Epstein said there was a lot to grind through and a lot to be proud of, but thinks there were times from the beginning of the season through 162 they needed to play with a little more sense of urgency and killer instinct.

Epstein doesn't think Bryant will need surgery this offseason. Rest and a full offseason will get him back to where he was earlier this year.

"Cole was such a breath of fresh air for us," and will be looking to bring him back for 2019. The lefty starter has a team option for next season.
