South Dakota ranchers Heather and Charles Maude, a young couple with two kids, face 10 years in prison and $250,000 fines each over a century-old fence dispute with the Forest Service.

The fence, built between 1910 and 1950, has marked their family’s ranch boundary for 114 years—recognized by the USDA since 1960. Indicted in June 2024 for “theft of government property,” they’re under a gag order, with trial set for April 29.

It started with an unnamed hunter’s complaint about a “No Hunting” sign, escalating within 87 days to federal charges. Heather’s parents, Randi and Tom Hamilton, are urging the Trump Administration to intervene, calling it government overreach.

“They’re busy making a living,” Randi says. “This fence was here before they were born.” The local ranching community fears they’re being targeted, with some suspecting a hidden agenda tied to a wildlife corridor. “They’re making an example of them,” Randi warns. “If they lose, it affects us all.”
