In July 2016, DEA issued a new nationwide report indicating hundreds of thousands of counterfeit prescription pills have been entering the U.S. drug market since 2014, some containing deadly amounts of fentanyl. #RxDrugs should be prescribed by a doctor! Prevent #RxAbuse
Parents, what you tell your children regarding underage drinking matter as they get older! By age 15, about 33 percent of teens have had at least 1 drink. Some kids may try alcohol as early as 9 years old. Between the ages of 9 and 13,
kids start to view alcohol differently.
#RxAbuse ranges from taking medicine that is prescribed to someone else, taking a larger dose, taking medicine in a different way than you are supposed to such as crushing tablets to snort or inject them. Prevention starts at home, dispose of any unused or expired medications.
Current alcohol consumption rate increases with age according to 2018 National Survey on Drug Use and Health from 1% among 12-13 year olds to nearly 18% at ages 16-17, and 38% among 18-20 year olds. Talk to your children of any age of negative consequences of #underagedrinking!
Don't take #meds without knowing their side effects! Misusing #RxDrugs is dangerous! Misusing #meds can cause serious side effects such as suicidal tendencies, depression, anxiety, etc. Safeguard your #meds to #prevent#RxAbuse! Put any #meds in a locked drawer, cabinet or safe!
In 2017, a total of 61,311 people died from drug overdoses, many from prescription opioid medicine. Fentanyl accounted for 26,211 preventable deaths in 2017, a 48% increase over the 17,696 total in 2016. #Prevent#RxAbuse by disposing of all your medications in nearby drop boxes.
1 out of 4 people had driven after drinking alcohol. Approximately 1 out of 4 people ride in a vehicle with a drunk driver. #Underage#Drinking#prevention starts at home by teaching youths about the consequences of drinking and driving. #Communication is key to a better future.
The most abused prescription drug by teens is codeine cough syrup. In South Texas, 1 in 10 7-12th grade students report misusing codeine cough syrup in 2016. Prescription drug misuse is real and affects much more people than what we think. Help us to #prevent#RxAbuse!

Among the more than 70,200 #RxDrugs overdose deaths estimated in 2017, the sharpest increase occurred among deaths related to fentanyl with more than 28,400 overdose deaths. Prevent #RxAbuse by disposing of your #meds properly.
#UnderageDrinking is a leading contributor to death from injuries and main cause of death for people under age 21. Each year, approximately 5,000 persons under the age of 21 die from causes related to #UnderageDrinking. These deaths include about 1,600 homicides and 300 suicides.
Some people #abuse#RxDrugs because they think it will help them have more fun, lose weight, fit in, and study effectively. #RxDrugs are easier to get than street drugs: Family members or friends may have them. Lock boxes are a good way to remove easy access to prevent #RxAbuse.

Drinking individuals are more likely to be impulsive. They may be at greater risk for having an alcohol-related traffic crash, getting into fights, or making unwise decisions about sex. #Prevention starts at home by teaching the youth about consequences of #underagedrinking.
#Meds have side effects that doctors explain to patients before prescribing. Not knowing details of side effects of #meds before taking them is hazardous to health. Around 1/3 of college students will abuse #meds during college. Talking to your children can help prevent this.
Drinking and driving is dangerous. 8% of youth drove after consuming alcohol and 20% rode with a driver who had consumed alcohol. Parents, teach your children about the negative consequences of #underagedrinking. Teach them how to say NO and establish ground rules in your homes.
