Here in Tampa Bay, they treasure @bakermayfield’s confidence & grit like he’s one of their own.

It reminds me of a lyric from another Florida man, Jimmy Buffett, that sums up Baker’s Bucs tenure perfectly: “Yes, I am a pirate, 200 years too late.”

Back in my 121 airline pilot days, I was taxiing out in a long line of airplanes at ATL. I was flying with the Chief Pilot, Charlie, on that humid summer morning.

Although the company had a non-smoking policy, he had the cockpit window open and was smoking a Marlboro, passing the time as we taxied in line.

Charlie was near the end of his career and was a tough but fair manager. He was definitely what you would call “old school” and didn’t mince words if he called you on the carpet for something. Despite all that, he was an absolute pleasure to fly with.

As that small ember approached the cigarettes filter, he flicked that spent butt out the window, where it landed on the taxiway below.

As we moved up, the Delta 757 pilot behind us called ground and refused to taxi forward, because, as he told ground control, “there is something smoking on the taxiway and it looked like it came from the 737 in front of us”.

Ground control inquired back to us, to which the Chief replied “that’s called a cigarette”. Silence on the radio, until the Delta pilot began demanding that the cigarette butt be removed and then reprimanding us for causing him a delay to his departure.

The Delta pilot ended by sternly saying “I would love to personally have a word with your Chief Pilot!” We laughed so hard that we could barely respond.

Charlie caught his breath, picked up the mic, and in his North Carolina drawl said: “Well, you’re talking to him SON! So go ahead! Tell me what you think!”

Silence. No response. We got cleared for takeoff and laughed all the way to 10,000 feet.

I’ve laughed to myself and smiled every time I’ve been in or out of ATL since that day.
