A PCORI-funded patient-centered CER study compared 2 non-drug treatments: mindfulness-based therapy (MBT) and cognitive-based therapy (CBT) to help adults with opioid-treated chronic low back pain reduce pain severity and opioid dose and improve quality of life.
After 1 year, the pragmatic randomized controlled trial found that adults receiving MBT and CBT had:
✔️ Improved pain levels and quality of life
✔️ Better ability to do daily activities
✔️ Reduced daily opioid medicine use
