Africa’s innovation success cannot be measured by patent filings and grants alone. The true measure is whether innovation improves lives, strengthens enterprises, creates jobs, enables technology transfer, and contributes to sustainable economic growth.
For @_ARIPO, this is the essence of a strong innovation ecosystem: IP that delivers tangible value to society.
We are cheering behind Cabo Verde 🇨🇻as they kick off their FIFA World Cup Campaign today!🏆

Intellectual property must no longer be seen as a narrow legal issue. IP needs to be in everything.
It belongs in agriculture, health, education, trade, technology, culture, sport, tourism, climate action, and national development planning.
Ideas, creativity, research, innovation, and enterprise will drive Africa’s future. Our task is to ensure these ideas are protected, financed, scaled, and transformed into real value.
At @_ARIPO, our strategic direction is clear: to make IP practical, accessible, inclusive, and central to Africa’s development.
When Africa protects its ideas, Africa strengthens its future.

⚽ The FIFA World Cup is not only about football. It is also one of the world’s largest intellectual property ecosystems.
Broadcasting rights, trademarks, sponsorships, merchandise, image rights and digital content all depend on strong IP protection.
As African teams compete on the global stage, we are reminded that sport creates value far beyond the pitch. Protecting IP in sports helps build stronger brands, support athletes, combat piracy, attract investment and grow Africa’s sports economy.
Football inspires millions. Intellectual property helps ensure that value is protected, shared and sustained—on and off the pitch.

ARIPO, in collaboration with the Government of the Kingdom of Lesotho @LesothoPR through the Registrar General’s Office, the Ministry of Law and Constitutional Affairs and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Nutrition, is hosting the Symposium on the Protection of New Varieties of Plants from 20–21 May 2026 in Maseru, Lesotho.
Held under the theme “Nurturing Agricultural Innovation: Advancing the Protection of New Plant Varieties for Food Security and Sustainable Agriculture in Africa,” the Symposium seeks to raise awareness on the role of #PlantVarietyProtection (PVP) in supporting agricultural development across the ARIPO Region and beyond.
The event brings together policymakers, legal and IP experts, plant breeders, seed companies, farmers and other key stakeholders to discuss the ratification and implementation of the Arusha Protocol, its alignment with national laws, and its relationship with the UPOV Convention. It also provides a platform for sharing experiences and developing practical recommendations to strengthen PVP systems in Africa.

It was my pleasure to address participants this morning at the opening of the Symposium on Plant Variety Protection (PVP) in Maseru, Lesotho, under the theme: “Nurturing Agricultural Innovation: Advancing the Protection of New Plant Varieties for Food Security and Sustainable Agriculture in Africa.”
As @_ARIPO marks its 50th anniversary this year, the Symposium reflects our continued commitment to strengthening innovation ecosystems that support agriculture, food security, climate resilience, and sustainable development across Africa.
PVP is not merely a legal framework; it is a strategic policy tool for promoting innovation, attracting investment, and transforming agriculture through research and improved plant breeding.
Through the Arusha Protocol, ARIPO continues to support Member States in building an enabling environment for agricultural innovation and the protection of new plant varieties.
My appreciation to the Government of the Kingdom of Lesotho for hosting this important Symposium, and to Hon. Selibe Mochoboroane, Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and Nutrition, for gracing the opening ceremony.
It was a pleasure to address delegates at the 5th Heads of Intellectual Property Offices Conference (HIPOC) in Maseru this morning, hosted by the Government of the Kingdom of Lesotho @LesothoPR.

Under the theme, “Digital Transformation: Harnessing AI, Strengthening Governance in IP Offices, and Advancing Regional IP Cooperation,” ARIPO Member States are not only discussing the future of IP. They are shaping it.
Our priority is clear: build IP Offices that are modern, trusted, secure, efficient, and inclusive, capable of serving innovators, businesses, researchers, and creators in a fast-changing global economy.
I extend my appreciation to the Kingdom of Lesotho for hosting this important conference, and to the Guest of Honour, Hon. Richard Ramoeletsi, Minister of Law and Justice, for reiterating the Government of Lesotho's commitment to advancing IP development in Lesotho.
