A Palestinian mother has discovered that her son, missing for nearly two years, is alive after recognising him in a viral photograph showing two Israeli soldiers smiling as they posed beside a blindfolded Palestinian detainee. The family identified the man as 22-year-old Mahmoud Al-Drimli, who disappeared on November 2, 2024, while attempting to return from southern Gaza to Gaza City. After months of unanswered appeals to the Red Cross and other organisations, his parents said they had received no information about whether he had been detained, killed or was still alive until the image surfaced online. "The moment I saw the picture, my heart was at peace, and I was happy. But at the same time, when I saw him in that state, my heart broke," his mother, Aida Al-Drimli, said through tears.

For Mahmoud's family, the photograph brought both relief and another devastating trauma. Rather than learning of his fate through official channels, they were forced to recognise him while he appeared blindfolded and being mocked in a widely shared image. The case has reignited criticism over Israel's handling of Palestinian detainees and the lack of information provided to families searching for missing relatives. Human rights groups have long raised concerns about the treatment of detainees and the anguish caused by prolonged uncertainty, with Mahmoud's story becoming a stark reminder of the emotional toll inflicted on Palestinian families living through the war."
