You did well. I pray God continues to bless you. Parents deprive themselves of so much to take care of their children. It's obvious we can't fully repay them, but we should try our best while they are alive. It's a good thing their rewards are not limited to this world.

I stepped away from a particular friendship because of this topic. When I completed my parent’s house (a fully furnished 4 bedroom bungalow) in Ilorin, and did the housewarming, he told me that it was not a smart move. I asked him why and he said: who builds a house for his parents when he doesn’t have one or still pays rent. To him, I must have built or bought a house for myself before thinking of doing that for my parents.

Then I told him, it’s simply because you are privileged. Do you know how much these people suffered to get me to where I am today? So it’s a dream come through for me that I could still build them a house before they die. Also, it’s the fruits of their labour and no better time for them to enjoy it than now that they are still alive and agile.

Moreso, that house is like a backup plan for me. If God says I will outlive my parents, it will eventually be my own house and it’s a place where everybody in the family can always stay during festive period and other important family occasions. Aside that, it will cost me more to build for myself than my parents. So what stops me from doing that now that I have the money to build for them?

Another thing is that I am someone who believes that through my parent’s prayers, my own too will come in no long time and truly not long that I secured my own land as well, even though I haven’t not started building on it. It’s a strong spiritual belief for me.
