And as we all know, political leadership doesn't attract Mother Theresa's or Florence Nightingales. They're too busy doing the work. Politicians are by their nature opinionated, single-minded and confident of their ideas. A group of this personality type in control in a socialist setting is not going to end well.

Socialism was an ideology in response to the Industrial Era. It was fit for purpose in European class systems where most people worked in factories. It is no longer fit for purpose. The term “socialism” dates back to the early 19th century. It was used to refer to a “system of social organisation where private property and the distribution of income are subject to social control.” It gained popularity in the mid-1800s after the publication of The Communist Manifesto (1848), in which Karl Marx describes the struggle between the working class and the capital class that emerged during the Industrial Revolution. Marx argued that the capitalist motive of profit harmed workers: “Factory owners exploited workers… by subjecting them to debilitating working conditions and exhausting hours.” Socialism arose as a response to these economic and social changes, meant “to remedy the economic and moral defects of capitalism.” And fair enough! But that is not the issue that needs solving in NZ today.

It removes the incentive to try harder or innovate. No point in working harder if what you earn is taken from you and distributed to those who don't try as hard as you or dream of better futures. The ones provided for (originally through circumstance) learn that there is no point in leveling up because a) they already receive the spoils from the hard workers and b) those that work harder don't benefit from it. It's the ideal idealogy for controlling governments because it creates a society of helpless, dependent child-like citizens. It concentrates power centrally, incrementally reduces rights, reduces freedom and stifles economic growth. Opinions are not tolerated. The people are a 'whole', you are not an individual. Your duty is to the whole. The focus is on poverty and if you rise above the poverty threshold you are a generator used to fuel the machine. You'll find most Socialist or Communist countries are devoid of Faith, Religion or Spirituality. Why? Because the government is their god and the people are so reduced that they no longer have hope in anything.

Because it's a flawed "idea" that has repeatedly failed. It kills the human spirit and reduces us to soulless ghouls devoid of self-determination. It rewards victimhood and learned helplessness. It punishes free thinkers and those who dare to break the socialist mould. Socialism mashes us all into one big blob. It refuses to recognise talent, it condemns individualism and achievement. It needs a mass. It relies on oppression and depression. Guilt. It extinguishes the light in the gifted ones who would bring the vulnerable with them, and forces them to become the vulnerable to conform and comply.
