Interview: The Largest Copper Deposit on Earth — Blocked by Biden and Trump
John Shively, former Alaska Commissioner of Natural Resources and CEO of the Pebble mining project, reveals that the United States takes an average of 29 years to bring a copper deposit to production — second worst in the world — while China does it in five, currently processes half the world's copper, and is actively paying companies to take their concentrate just to lock up the supply chain downstream. Pebble sits on the largest undeveloped copper deposit on earth, has spent over a billion dollars and $150 million on environmental studies alone proving the project can be done cleanly, won its permitting appeal in court — and then watched both the Biden EPA and the Trump administration defend the same regulatory veto that is blocking it anyway.
A message from our CEO John Shively: "Last week Pebble, the State of Alaska and the Pacific Legal Foundation (on behalf of two Native Village Corporations) filed their final briefs in their lawsuits asking the court to overturn the EPA’s veto of Pebble Mine. Among other things, Pebble argued that EPA ignored the findings of the Final Environmental Impact Statement which found that the mine could be developed without harming the fishery. We also argued that the EPA’s economic assessment was extremely biased because it failed account for the 100’s of millions of dollars of lost economic opportunity resulting from their decision as is legally required."

One takeaway from #CERAWeek 2026: AI runs on copper. With demand rising sharply and supply struggling to keep up, the need for new domestic resources is becoming a major policy and economic issue. America has opportunities: including Alaska’s Pebble deposit.

AI needs power. Power needs copper.
At #CERAWeek, leaders are discussing the coming “Copper Conundrum.” Demand could rise 50% by 2040 — but supply may fall far short.
Domestic resources like Pebble could play a major role.
