A system that benefitted all and didn't favor any.

A system that would change the world from that point forward.

Not only did this person envision a better system, they created it and then left it behind to let the world decide what to do with it.

Don't trust, verify is the fundamental idea behind the blockchain; if everything is transparent then you shouldn't have to trust the information, because you can verify it for yourself. But it's a little more complicated than that.

In order to verify information in this complicated multi-chain scenario, you want to be able to run a network node because it allows you to verify transactions on the network, increase decentralization, and enforce the network rules.

How does this look for an oracle?

Oracles provide the necessary information that allow blockchains to communicate with the outside world. If the vision for blockchain is to bring everything on-chain, you can't do that without an oracle.

Ask yourself: if there is hundreds of trillions of dollars in value sitting on-chain, do you really want a 4/9 multisig in control of that value via 21 nodes ran by multinational companies that already control a lot of wealth? Or do you want a network of highly decentralized nodes who cannot control the protocol and can simply provide information, and if that information is false they are filtered out?

These decisions need to be made well in advanced of onboarding people to Web3 and cryptocurrency.

Why?

Because we need to be building out the tooling for censorship-resistant data that doesn't have a single point of failure.

Witnet currently has 6,000+ nodes that have recently found a block or solved a data request, and 2,000+ nodes that have received reputation for solving a data request. The actual number of nodes running on the network is much higher, but can't be quantified because of unique setups and privacy walls.

Ask your oracle of choice how many nodes are running. If the answer is anything less than 6,000 then you could be hurting your chances of building a product that can withstand nation-state attacks.
