To congratulate @LouiePorta, Program Director @Arctic Ocean Initiative (previously Executive Director, Oceans North) for being awarded King Charles III’s Coronation Medal for his significant contribution to ocean conservation in Canada👏
I could not be more happy for you, Roz. Your intellect, unique achievements on the oceans, your drive to succeed, and your knowledge and concern for our global ocean gives me more hope in these dark times. CONGRATULATIONS! https://t.co/bd0zSU7dBU

@stevegroves@Heritage 19 Dec 2023, USA uses the criteria agreed by most maritime nations within UNCLOS (tho USA has never ratified its signature) to unilaterally ‘claim’ sovereign rights over its ‘Extended Continental Shelf’ equating to an extra 1 million sq km. Illegal? Illegitimate? Irresponsible?
At least China is still a signatory of UNCLOS, while USA never signed it so should not have access to the mechanisms it offers. Meanwhile China may withdraw cos it conflict with its goal to gain sovereign rights of South China Seas. @Heritage@stevegroves https://t.co/biAxREFxKn
@stevegroves@Heritage That’s my point. US doesn’t have access, yet you suggest it should unilaterally claim an Extended EZ using the criteria conferred on signatories of UNCLOS … while continuing to avoid signing UNCLOS. Sounds like recipe for others to unsign & do the same. Like China soon? Chaos?
What if every nation unilaterally declared extensions of its sovereign rights for the sub-surface water column inc living marine resources, without being a signatory to the very international agreement that enabled such extensions? @Heritage@stevegroves https://t.co/biAxREFxKn
“We are playing Russian roulette with our planet,” said UN Secretary-General António Guterres. “We need an exit ramp off the highway to climate hell. Powerful speech on #WorldEnvironmentDay

As insightful perspectives go on geopolitics of the #CentralArcticOcean this article is right up there. China’s arming itself with a major armoury of scientific research to guide its strategy & influence - while Arctic states ease off! https://t.co/yeTGvokd1T via @ConversationCA
The dreaded evolution of shipping in the Arctic Ocean continues. First non-ice class container ship has received Arctic permit from Russians. Other shipping companies on #NSR include, Chinese NewNew Shipping Line, Safetrans Line & (disappointing) Maersk. https://t.co/lbli5kOFiE
Congrats to Melissa Haney, the first female Inuk captain @AirInuit. A lady who takes in her stride the challenges of flying in the high Arctic - just read on! And folk complain about even 15 minute delays and any re-routings down South! https://t.co/e45kkYjYvC..
Russia’s disposal of radioactive materials from its retired submarines, K-27 & K-159 - two subs sunk to 33m & 240m seabed carrying 1 million curies of radiation. Russia indicates plan to recover them. When? How? Threat to contamination of fish etc is real. https://t.co/yJrYdIP0sU
Informed assessment on status of radioactive waste disposal in #ArcticOcean by Russia - improving with collaboration from #Norway#Italy#Netherlands#UK + European Bank of Reconstruction & Devlpt, until Russia invasion of Ukraine. @BarentsNews@bellona_EU https://t.co/yJrYdIPyis
0-0 HT Greenland v Turkmenistan = good form but less travel time & more fitness needed. During 6 months in Taasilaq (Greenland, 1989-90) I played with the locals on the small grit-surface pitch, dynamited out of the hillside, lit overhead by the moon & aurora. Onwards, Greenland.
🇬🇱 Greenland's first match against a senior men's national team since 2013 ends in a 5-0 loss to Turkmenistan in Antalya.
After three flights lasting eight hours in total, Greenland battled valiantly and kept it goalless at the break but tiredness got to them in the second half.
After decades of minimal capital
