PFRDA changed a bunch of rules for NPS last month, added hacks:
Can now withdraw upto Rs.5lakh tax free (keep contributing via Corporate NPS upto 5lakh,and keep withdrawing when you hit 5lakh.Restart under a new contribution, and repeat).Above 5lakh,80% tax free & rest is taxed
We’ve partnered with @PensionBox who have created a seamless online journey for HRs/Accounts teams to onboard (no charges),integrate payroll, and allow employees to select what % of salaries they would like to contribute & how much towards Equity & Debt
Love the move towards digitizing Corporate NPS with @PensionBox! Simplifying onboarding for HR teams and making contribution choices easier for employees is a game-changer. Do you think more companies will start adopting this digital approach? Could this become the new standard? 💻📈 #TaxSaving #CorporateNPS #DigitalTransformation
In FY25, around 72% of taxpayers chose the New Tax Regime. At @zerodha , that number was over 90%.
This shift makes sense. The new tax regime trades deductions for simpler filing and lower tax rates. For many—especially younger salaried taxpayers, avoiding paperwork-heavy exemptions matters more than maximising deductions.
With most deductions removed, salaried employees are left with the ₹75,000 standard deduction and one meaningful tax-saving option: the employer contribution to NPS, commonly called Corporate NPS.
Corporate NPS allows employers to contribute up to 14% of an employee’s basic salary (up to ₹7.5 lakh a year), which is fully deductible. It can be structured from existing salary, so employers don’t have to pay extra while employees still get the tax benefit. Employers may also choose to contribute on top, but it isn’t mandatory.
We’ve partnered with @PensionBox to make Corporate NPS fully digital, simplifying onboarding for HR teams and allowing employees to easily choose contribution levels and equity–debt allocation.
@Ra_Taal@ZerodhaVarsity@O_bhaina Best to check with protean if they have enabled this or not. In case it's not available till 25th Dec then PFRDA should increase the timeline.
@O_bhaina@ZerodhaVarsity Your CRA (Protean or Kfintech) or POP should be able to help you out in making this move. It won't happen automatically, user have to initiate the move.
Another big NPS update: Annuity requirement cut from 40% to 20% (for non-govt employees)↘️
At its core, NPS works like this: you save some amount every year for retirement. When you turn 60, you can take out a lump sum, but a portion of the money must be used compulsorily to purchase an annuity. The idea was that this annuity would give you a lifelong pension.
Meanwhile, in the event of an emergency, NPS allows partial withdrawals, provided certain conditions are met.
Sounds simple, but the devil lies in its details.
Annuity products have not been particularly well-received, largely due to subpar returns. Investors wanted greater flexibility and control over their own investments.
So, here’s what’s changed in the exit rules for NPS.
Any questions? Leave a comment. Team @ZerodhaVarsity or @PensionBox will take them.
We are having an live Free QnA session for all NPS Queries Saturday 2 PM to 4 PM - 20th Dec 2025

Most Indians will live 10–15 years beyond the traditional retirement age, yet crores still have no structured pension plan. NPS should have solved this; it's regulated, market-linked, and built for long-term security — but adoption has stayed low because the experience is broken for both individuals and companies. @PensionBox is fixing the plumbing, turning NPS from a difficult process into a seamless, fully digital system.
We’ve known @KuldeepBox and Shivam Parashar for a while, and their clarity on India’s retirement gap really stood out. At Rainmatter, we’re investing in PensionBox, and at @zerodha, we’re partnering with them to power our Corporate NPS offering. If we can make retirement infrastructure this simple, NPS can finally become the default for millions.
What do we really need from EPF/ @officialepfo ?
1. Let people opt out or stop EPF contributions
2. Let people move funds to NPS (100%)
3. Open EPFO APIs for people (Top 3 needs)
- UAN Balance API
- Raise Claim API
- Claim Status API
What else?
