Earth was born approximately 4.54 billion years ago when gravity pulled swirling gas and dust in the solar nebula to become the third planet from the Sun.
Early Earth was nothing like the world we know today.
It formed as planetesimals: chunks of rock and dust collided and clumped together.
Heavier elements sank toward the center, forming the core, while lighter elements rose to the surface.
When Earth was young, a Mars-sized object called Theia smashed into it in a catastrophic collision.
The impact displaced a portion of Earth's interior, and the resulting chunks clumped together to form the Moon approximately 4.46 to 4.51 billion years ago, only about 60 to 100 million years after Earth itself formed.
The Moon was originally 17 times closer than it is today, just 14,000 miles away.
After the collision, Earth was molten and rotated much faster than it does now.
By about 4.3 billion years ago, Earth's surface had cooled enough for water vapor in the atmosphere to condense, forming the first oceans.
Between 4.1 and 3.8 billion years ago, Earth endured the Late Heavy Bombardment, an increased rate of asteroid and comet impacts that melted the crust and shaped the early atmosphere.
This bombardment was likely triggered when the giant planets shifted their orbits hundreds of millions of years after Earth formed.
Life emerged around 3.5 to 3.8 billion years ago in the form of simple, single-celled organisms.
Cellular life has had an uninterrupted streak going for about 3.5 billion years.
Earth is unique.
It's the only planet in the solar system whose name doesn't come from Greek or Roman mythology.
"Earth" comes from Old English and Germanic, simply meaning "the ground."
The name is about 1,000 years old.
With an equatorial diameter of 7,926 miles, Earth is the biggest terrestrial planet and the fifth largest planet in our solar system.
It sits 93 million miles from the Sun, exactly one astronomical unit.
Earth completes one rotation every 23.9 hours.
It takes 365.25 days to orbit the Sun, that extra quarter day is why we have leap years every four years.
Earth's axis is tilted 23.4 degrees, which gives us our seasons.
The planet's molten nickel-iron core generates a magnetic field that protects us from solar wind and creates the auroras.
About 71% of Earth's surface is covered in liquid water, a feature that makes it uniquely hospitable for life.
No other known planet has liquid water covering most of its surface for extended periods.
Earth has survived five mass extinction events, including the End-Permian "Great Dying" 252 million years ago and the asteroid impact 66 million years ago that killed three-quarters of all species.
Today, Earth is home to over 8 billion people and countless other species.
Still stunning after 4.54 billion years!

Jonathan is a Seychelles giant tortoise believed to have hatched around 1832.
He holds the Guinness World Record as the oldest living land animal.
In 1882, he was brought to St. Helena from the Seychelles as a gift to Governor William Grey-Wilson.
He was already about 50 years old when he arrived.
St. Helena is a British territory in the South Atlantic where Napoleon Bonaparte was exiled and died in 1821βabout a decade before Jonathan hatched.
Jonathan was unnamed until the 1930s, when Governor Spencer Davis named him.
He has lived through 31 governors and 8 British monarchs.
Since 1882, Jonathan has lived at Plantation House, the governor's residence.
He lives with other tortoises: David, Emma, Myrtle, and Frederik.
A photograph from 1886 shows Jonathan fully grown.
Another from 1947 shows him with King George VI and Princess Elizabeth during their visit.
In 2015, veterinarian Joe Hollins reported Jonathan was blind from cataracts and had lost his sense of smell, but retained excellent hearing.
Hollins hand-feeds him weekly with grass, hay, bananas, lettuce, cabbage, carrots, cucumbers, and apples.
Despite blindness, Jonathan remains active.
He's attracted to tourist chatter and tennis matches.
In 1969, he overturned benches outside tennis courts due to loneliness.
Officials brought in companions. He interrupts croquet games by sitting on the balls.
Jonathan appears on the St. Helena 5-pence coin.
In November 2022, Governor Nigel Phillips declared December 4, 1832, as his official birthday.
On April 1, 2026, a fake X account impersonating Dr. Hollins claimed Jonathan had died.
The post got nearly 2 million views.
News outlets reported it before learning it was false.
The real Dr. Hollins confirmed on Facebook he had no X account and it was a hoax.
The hoaxer was soliciting cryptocurrency donations.
On April 2, Anne Dillon, St. Helena's communications head, told AP: "It was a hoax. He is very much alive."
Governor Phillips posted proof: Jonathan munching leaves with an iPad showing the BBC homepage.
Phillips joked, quoting Mark Twain: "The report of my death was an exaggeration."
The fake account later admitted: "This was just an April Fools' prank."
Jonathan is 193 years old and still alive on St. Helena.
