Happy birthday Paines Plough. In 1997 I was the company’s literary manager and Sarah Kane was our playwright in residence. A small investment in early stage writers yields so much …
My hope : creativity will be placed as a core skill at the centre of education.
My fear : students sitting passively through a series of power point lectures about creativity.
Creativity is experienced and by its nature does not have a pre determined goal.
If I could define my mission it’s this : To protect a little flame of mischief - playfulness, creativity, free associative thought- in myself and others as we negotiate out way through education and work.
This dog on #Crufts2024 looks like she’s starring in an ITV drama about a retired detective chief inspector in a quaint Yorkshire village, who has a shrewd mind and one last case to solve
As a child, gestures like this mean a lot. She could have taken any bag, but the fact she took the bag her 9yr old made is going to fill her daughter with so much confidence. Parental support like this creates core memories that can have a huge impact on a child’s development.
I first met Sarah Kane in 1996 when I invited her to be writer in residence at Paines Plough. She was incredibly generous with other writers and a great director. Her plays of course are unparalleled. And look at that cigarette ! We filled Paines Plough with a steady fug.
Writing tip: I start a writing day and say ‘I’ll just write three lines and then call it a day ‘. 99% of the time I then find ‘I’m enjoying this’ and then write a few pages. But if I don’t enjoy those three lines, I do something else. If a play ain’t ‘play’ I stop until tomorrow
My students discovering for the first time the ‘I’m excited about my play/ I’m struggling with my play / I’m pleased with my play / I hate my play / I think my play may be ok’ journey. I’m here to say ‘that’s all normal - keep going !’
Sinéad O'Connor was brilliant, smart and courageous as fuck. I hope she’s remembered for her sense of humour, too.
Here she is attending an anti-Sinéad O'Connor demonstration in disguise. Truly one of a kind 🖤
In 2006, students from Xavier High School in NYC sent Kurt Vonnegut five letters asking the aging writer to visit their class. What he wrote back is one of the most inspiring things ever:
Hoje de manhã ele saiu chorando de casa, ansioso, com medo dessa nova jornada. Hoje voltou radiante de alegria, com mensagens e fotos com todos os colegas de trabalho, com fotos com as crianças que são amigas dele e que foram visitar, super-feliz.
