Finland is cutting Russia off from European internet

The Finnish company Fingrid will stop servicing Russian power line infrastructure from 2027, where fiber-optic communication lines run. As a result, the cables may be dismantled or cut.

These lines began being used for internet transit after 2022, when Russia stopped supplying electricity to Finland.

Currently, around 60–70% of Russia’s foreign internet traffic passes through the Finnish route.

Operators say there will be no complete shutdown — traffic can be redirected through Belarus, the Baltic states, and underwater cables in the Baltic Sea.

However, available capacity will decrease, and the quality of international connections in Russia’s northwestern region may worsen.

This will not affect Russia’s domestic internet. The issue concerns access specifically to foreign services and external communication channels.
