@HotHandTheory@ShaxNBA 2. Part of what makes ghost cov work is not just having a big wing to put on KAT and a rim protector to roam, but it also requires Hart’s reluctance. If Hart is attempting 11 3s as he did in game 2 vs CLE, the ppp on that shot with no contest is incredibly high.
@HotHandTheory I agree with this and was shocked to see Wemby on KAT to start the game but have 2 thoughts
1. Per @ShaxNBA the Spurs deployed ghost cov more than any team during the reg szn. That they are abandoning it after deploying it so much makes me question if the calculus has changed
@xavierjdesigns@ShaxNBA It’s also probably related to the fact that mainstream sports media (and also much of “independent” sports media) has basically become a vehicle to advertise sports betting and prediction markets (unfortunately, IMO)
@xavierjdesigns I agree with you 90% of the way on this. I just personally find: “are you so miserable you can’t enjoy this dude’s greatness because of the flopping?” more compelling than, “have you considered we don’t have data on his flops for drive relative to other players?” Lol
@xavierjdesigns I think it’s about him flopping *frequently*. And again, I find it annoying that people focus on it disproportionately compared to focusing on his greatness. And he draws a ton of legitimate contact because he plays at a pace that constantly keeps his defender off balance.
@xavierjdesigns Is this a specific person’s argument you’re responding to? Or like the general twitter discourse? A lot of what I see is people posting threads of flops each game - which I also find annoying but I do think serves as evidence that he flops with frequency.
@xavierjdesigns That said, SGA takes a lot of ft’s because he drives a ton and plays at an unconventional pace with insane craft. OKC plays physical D and gets called for a lot of fouls. And the focus on the flopping leads people to miss out on great ball (which I think we agree on).
@xavierjdesigns I think the actual gripe some have with SGA is that on a significant number of his drives/jumpers he exaggerates contact in ways that look unnatural. Video clips - often many each game - are evidence to substantiate this claim just as video of a crime is evidence of a crime.
I’m not one for the “if you weren’t here for this” tweets. But I will say:
As a kid, I (and I know many of you) sat there watching every single game. Grasping for any hope.
Jubilant for the smallest victories.
Marbury and Curry and Lee and Melo and Porzingis and tanks and lotteries and teams without even a single recognizable name.
Hundreds of hours of wondering how in the world we could even approach where this team now finds itself.
So I say, let’s bask in it.
Congrats to all of you. Let’s keep going.
@xavierjdesigns@jdom9611 What Atkinson could have said: “it’s a make or miss league”
Think Atkinson’s style of data comms is what leads Hart to think analytics has labeled him a bad player when the reality is if analytics guys had more influence he’d likely have been drafted higher and paid more.
@xavierjdesigns@jdom9611 I also think the way Atkinson is using “analytics” here to mean “shot quality” is totally flawed. Shot quality is one data point among so many that does not individually determine the outcome of a game.
@DJAceNBA Grimes has been ass this series and is a far less reliable shooter and decision maker than most thought he would be when he came into the league. But I have a hard time saying “toughness” is the issue when he gave us this moment.
@SamQuinnCBS This is reasonable, but we also didn’t think any non-Celtics team would make it close vs the Thunder last year and the Pacers took them to 7.
@DJAceNBA Hope we don’t need to but I’d prefer slotting Deuce in for OG. That lineup was 90th percentile net with a 99th percentile O-rating and I think Deuce has done a serviceable job on Maxey this series in limited opps.
@ShaxNBA Hugo and D White shared the court for over 500 regular season mins and were an absolutely insane +28.8 net rating. The fact that Hugo found his way out of the rotation is a comparably wild coaching choice to not starting the 2nd/4th with KAT.
