Hi guys, this is Pika!
Today, as a collaborator, I will introduce Amaterasu from Solstice.
When I decided to partner with Solstice to develop Amaterasu, I thought long and hard about finding an ideal surface that would not only suit my personal preferences but also align with Solstice's brand philosophy of "precision targeting".
The project lasted for nearly six months, during which the surface properties of Amaterasu were continuously adjusted. Initially, my goal was to push it towards the ultimate speed skating positioning, but as a plethora of high-quality speed pads emerged on the market, I had a new idea: to give Amaterasu a unique and distinctive identity.
It wasn't until I met more and more Apex Legends pros through kirisame that I found a clear direction. Top players on the field are not obsessed with exaggerated sliding speed and fancy aiming. Their core goal is to ensure that every aim is stable and controllable, and to complete the kill efficiently.
Just like Return or NIRVANA, they have all created balance pads according to their preferences. But I'm not a professional athlete; I personally prefer speed pads. After repeatedly testing and comparing various samples, I finalized this solution that combines speed performance with a balanced feel, and Amaterasu was born.
The Amaterasu features a thin, light coating that provides a smooth, dry feel with minimal texture feedback. There's no greasy or slippery sensation throughout, resulting in a smooth overall gliding experience. It boasts low initial friction and excellent gliding performance, which complement each other. When controlling the mouse, you don't need to rely on particularly fast speeds to get a sensitive start response, and the fine-tuning of steering is also more flexible.
It is indeed not geared towards extreme speed skating; compared to current mainstream super speed pads, its maximum gliding performance is slightly inferior. The surface does not solely pursue the maximum level of slippage; its performance is positioned between a quick pad and a quick balance pad. By changing different skates, a clear switch between the two feel curves can be achieved.
It's worth mentioning that the Amaterasu doesn't significantly slow down with changes in the pressure applied, yet it boasts excellent braking capabilities. The smooth, dry-textured coating reduces inertia during sudden braking, minimizes the feeling of floating, and allows the mouse to stop more easily.
The challenge for beginners is often not how to stop the mouse, but the frequent switching of the aiming rhythm between starting and braking during battles. The braking performance of Amaterasu provides a highly coherent feel between starting and stopping,Even if tension causes unstable exertion, there will be no obvious stalling or juddering.
My original intention was not complicated. On the one hand, I wanted players to experience the smooth and enjoyable controls of a glass pad;on the other hand, I didn't want excessive glide speed to increase the learning curve for beginners. As Solstice's first glass pad, I hoped it would be compatible with a wider range of users.
Amaterasu still needs a little bit of time to truly meet everyone, but it won't be too long.Anyone interested should keep an eye on Solstice's updates.
So happy to finally share this.
I’ve been testing the V1 X-Raypad glass mousepad. They sent over two versions: uncoated and coated. This one is the coated version, which is meant to be the speed-focused variant in their glass pad lineup.
This is also the first time I’ve had true coated and uncoated glass pads side by side. Having both types in hand makes the difference much easier to feel, and I can now tell pretty quickly when a glass pad is coated or uncoated.
First impressions are good, but I think it can be faster.
X-Raypad plans to use my feedback, along with input from a few others, to refine this into the best glass pad they can make. Considering Jade Dots are still some of my favorite skates ever, I’m excited to help them push for the fastest glide possible while still complementing their skate lineup.
This is early, but there’s real potential here.
