A message from a Danish friend that really hit home:

“Dear Americans, Look Inward

I write this as a Dane, from Denmark. From here — and with Greenland very much in mind — it may appear that we fear the direction the United States is heading. And we do. But the truth is that you — as an American — are far more frightened.

You live in a country where power turns against its own people. Where the military is used at home. Where democratic institutions are weakened while fear becomes a governing tool. In that reality, silence is not neutral. It is a survival strategy.

So, you do things to convince yourself that everything is fine. You scroll. You binge-watch. You drink a little more. You choose sitcoms over news. You post a smiling selfie, add a stronger filter, and write: “Doing great.”

You stay quiet because speaking up can cost you your job. Because your employer fears losing contracts. Because schools, boards, and communities prefer calm over courage. So denial becomes routine. Distraction becomes normal. Comfort replaces truth. But fear does not stop there. You begin to police yourselves. You watch each other. You suspect each other. You question motives. You report. You label. You call fellow citizens extremists. You call them terrorists. In the name of security, you learn to mistrust one another.

And then think about this: when you dream of a bigger gun, a stronger caliber, more firepower. Ask yourself whether that weapon is protection, or a mirror. Whether the need for a larger gun is not a sign of strength, but a measure of how afraid you have become. Fear has many faces. Fear of those who call themselves patriots but threaten instead of arguing. Fear of your neighbor. Fear of the police. Fear of being open, kind, or publicly disagreeing. From the outside, this does not look like freedom. It looks like a frightening society pretending to function.

And then there is the thought you try hardest to suppress: that people willingly choose not to be part of the United States. Not out of hatred. Not out of jealousy. But out of clarity. That must be brutal and deeply disorienting to face — especially because, deep down, you already know why.

So, look inward. Not as a nation. As a person. Because democracies do not collapse in one dramatic moment. They fade while people convince themselves that everything is fine.

I counted at least 18 false claims in President Trump’s speech to House Republicans today. Here’s a quick fact check of some of the things he said. There’s a link at the bottom with more details.
- Washington, DC hasn’t had a murder “in seven months” (there have been dozens of murders in DC in the last seven months, including multiple murders within the last two weeks)
- DC is “now the safest city in the country” (not even close to true, though crime is down)
- He’s reducing prescription drug prices by “thousands of percent” (again: mathematically impossible)
- The House Jan. 6 committee failed to note that he used the words “peacefully and patriotically” in his speech before the riot (it did note he said that, though also correctly noted the rest of the speech was combative and filled with election lies)
- Nancy Pelosi turned down 10,000 National Guard troops (still zero evidence she was ever offered them, and the president, not the speaker, is in charge of the DC Guard anyway)
- Pelosi was caught on her daughter’s documentary footage admitting she turned down the National Guard troops that day and saying, “It's my fault, I should’ve taken the soldiers” (Pelosi didn’t say that; she said she took responsibility for not “having them just prepare for more” at the Capitol, not that she turned down Guard troops, and added, “Why weren’t the National Guard there to begin with?”)
- Two 2024 Olympic gold medalists in women’s boxing were men who “transitioned” (both of the boxers who faced gender scrutiny were always female and always competed in women’s events)
- The 2020 election “was rigged” (he lost fair and square)
- He “won Minnesota” (he lost there three straight times) or would have without corrupt elections (nonsense)
- “We’re the only country that votes by mail, essentially” (dozens of countries use mail-in voting)
- In his 2019 call with Zelensky, he simply “told Ukraine not to cheat, and if you see any cheating, report it to the Attorney General of the United States” (he pressured Zelensky to investigate Biden and an election conspiracy theory)
- He was beating Biden “by 30 points” when Biden unfairly dropped out midway through the race (he had single-digit leads over Biden in most polls)
- There’s “$18 trillion” being invested in the US (this figure is fiction, nearly double the White House's own wildly inflated $9.6 trillion figure)
- “Many stations” are now selling gas for $1.99 a gallon (“many” is too vague to call this flat false, but GasBuddy says about 650 out of 150,000 US gas stations it tracks, 0.43%, are below $2 today aside from special discounts)
- “Prisons from the Congo” were released into the US under Biden (both Congo countries and independent experts say this didn’t happen, and Trump’s team has never provided a shred of evidence)
- Last year’s Los Angeles wildfires were affected by California using some water to protect a fish species in the north of the state (California water experts have repeatedly explained those two things are completely unrelated)
- He inherited “the greatest inflation in history” (even peak Biden-era inflation of 9.1% in June 2022 was less than half the all-time high of 23.7%, and it then declined to 3.0% in January 2025, just a bit above where it is now)
- He achieved “no tax on Social Security” (he didn’t; his big bill created an additional deduction for people 65+, but many people 65+ and also recipients under 65 are continuing to paying tax on Social Security) https://t.co/3bYMctU2sy

President Trump did a whole lot of lying on "60 Minutes." Here's a fact check of 18 of his false claims to Norah O’Donnell, the vast majority of them previously debunked:

- It's not true grocery prices "are down"; Trump told this lie even after O’Donnell told him they're up
- It's not true there is now "no inflation" (it’s at 3%) or that it's "less than 2%" (it's at 3%)
- It's not true it was "my idea, which nobody, frankly, had thought of," to have AI facilities generate their own power on-site (they were already starting to do that while he was out of office, with Biden administration encouragement)
- It's not true “$17 trillion” is being invested in the US “right now" (this fictional figure is nearly double the White House's own wildly inflated "announcements" figure)
- It's not true each alleged drug boat "kills 25,000 Americans" (this figure plainly makes no sense given US overdose death totals)
- It's not true some recent former presidents invoked the Insurrection Act "28 times" (Ulysses S. Grant has the record because he invoked it on six occasions)
- It's not true Trump has ended "eight wars" (among other issues, his list includes two situations that weren't wars at all, one war still going full tilt in the DRC, and the Gaza conflict where killing also continues)
- It's not true the Kamala Harris interview Trump sued "60 Minutes" over aired "two days" before the election (it was more than four full weeks before Election Day)
- It's not true Biden gave Ukraine "$350 billion" (inspector general says the US had disbursed $94 billion through June 2025 and appropriated $93 billion more, including funds spent in the US)
- It's not true foreign countries pay his tariffs (US importers make the payments and often pass on costs to consumers)
- It's not true Trump inherited the worst inflation of all time (it was 3% the month he took office, same as now, and even the 9.1% Biden-era peak in 2022 was not close to the all-time record)
- It's not true the 2020 election was "rigged and stolen" (his usual lie) 
- It's not true the Presidential Records Act says he was allowed to have classified documents at his home post-presidency (it says all presidential records are to be in government custody the moment a president leaves office)
- It's not true Trump never instructed the Justice Department to go after Comey and James (he explicitly pressured the head of the department to do so in a social media post we all saw)
- It's not true Democrats are trying to give $1.5 trillion to illegal immigrants in the shutdown battle (even the White House's own disputed figure is a small fraction of that) or that Biden let in 25 million migrants (it's well under half that even if you count millions who were rapidly expelled)
- It's not true foreign leaders have emptied their prisons to somehow insert criminals into the US as migrants (Trump's own team has never been able to corroborate this story experts say is baseless)
- It's not true Nancy Pelosi flipped out after finding out his controversial 2019 call with Zelensky “was taped” (there remains no known US tape; what Trump released was a rough transcript, which bolstered rather than undermined Pelosi’s move toward impeachment)

Guns are a uniquely American problem.
The rest of the world has mental health issues.
The rest of the world has ideological & philosophical division.
They have social media, pot, porn, cellphones & video games.

What they don’t have — is more guns than people, they don’t have more than 500 mass shootings in less than a year, they don’t have a populace paralyzed with fear that their child will be next. That THEY could be next.

At least, not until they arrive here.

After a British gunman killed 16 people in 1987, the country banned semiautomatic weapons like those he had used. It did the same with most handguns after a 1996 school shooting. It now has one of the lowest gun-related death rates in the developed world.

In Australia, a 1996 massacre prompted mandatory gun buybacks The rate of mass shootings went from once every 18 months to only one in the 26 years since.

Canada also tightened gun laws after a 1989 mass shooting.
So did Germany in 2002, New Zealand in 2019 and Norway in 2021.

Meanwhile here in America… since the Columbine massacre, there have been a total of 304 fatal school shootings in the United States.

Since 1999, 440 people have been killed and 1,243 injured in shooting events at K-12 schools.

Gun violence is now the number one killer of kids in this country.
Number 1.

Since Sandy Hook — mass shootings have nearly tripled.

121 people have been killed and 281 people have been injured from school shootings since Parkland.

And there have been well over 100 incidents of gunfire at K-12 schools since the Uvalde school shooting.

In 2023, in the 632+ mass shootings recorded, 597 people died and 2,380 people were injured.

In total last year in this country - more than 40,000 people died from gun violence. That is an average of almost 118 gun deaths each day.

Every year, approximately three million kids are exposed to gun violence.

This. Is. An. American. Problem.
There are more civilian owned guns in this country than there are civilians.
It’s not the pot, the porn, the video games, it’s not the wrong kinds of locks, or too few “good guys with guns”, and it’s not the mental health issues.

Nearly every other country on earth has those things. And they don’t live this way.
