This a gross misunderstanding of the work DeepSeek has done. Yes, they trained part of their model with ChatGPT outputs, but they essentially invented a new method for training LLMs that doesn't require supervised learning datasets for reinforcement learning and they open sourced it under an MIT license!!

Overnight, this frontier model is in the hands of so many people around the world, who are pushing the model to its limits.

It's not even about them making some ChatGPT. It is about making them making the inner workings of their model accessible to everyone across the world. They did the very thing OpenAI was founded to do.

But it also goes beyond that. They've published 16 or so papers on their models, going into immense detail of their methods. Something the frontier model companies in America aren't doing.

It's not even about DeepSeek R1 or V3. It is the fact that their new training technique is going to usher us into a whole new world of improving the capabilities of AI.

But let's think about it. How would DeepSeek even get access to OpenAI's models to copy in the first place? At best the only thing we could regard as 'copying' is Meta's LLM which they made open source. A step further and we might just as well say that everyone is copying because it was Google that invented the transformer model which kickstarted this whole thing.
