Using a "z" for a "z" sound or continuing to honor or honour the French etymology, that is the question! The American spelling helps for learning & teaching to read, but all dialectal spellings have about 200,000 of such errors! Funny the Brits don't write "errour"! But "errurs" would be bettur. Sorry! "Better"! & They wonder why all English-speaking kids are delayed by about 5 years? All the evidence prove it! The average age of spelling bee champions are 12. All Spanish & Finnish kids can decode ALL of their words by Grade 1. Okay! 95%! Everybody is thinking "phonics" will solve it all! Literacy experts fooled everyone with their whole word junk. Trust them again! Are tutoring agencies going out of business? The elite is laughing at the plebs accepting junk. Tbf, junk food manufacturers are doing okay! Big pharma did okay during Covid! Not to say there are no dumb people in all races, but maybe the fields (cotton or others) were not & are not exactly levelled.

You see if the English spelling system were truly systematic, regular, ALL kids could learn, spell, read, & speak "proper" English or its 100s of dialects g do it fast like ALL Spanish and Finnish kids can their own language.

Fact is that no one in Mississippi or Oxford has or will ever be able to decode all English words by Grade 1 with phonic or not. In fact, all reports reveal it takes 5 years (& often more) for any anglophone anywhere on the planet to decode just a few thousand words with or without phonics. Spelling Bees' winners' ages prove this. There are 400,000 English words & 1/2 of those have spellings that made Orwell angry! Why are we boasting about this huge delay, trauma, & a mediocre system (& spending lots of money doing it in Mississippi compared to Finland or Spain where kids can all decode by grade 1). Guess which ones have a systematic orthography?

The English spelling system has 1/2 of all of its words not adhering to the alphabetic one-letter-one-sound principle. It has 200+ ways to spell 44 phonemes. Not 44 ways. No wonder it takes years to learn WITH phonics! Blame teachers! Blame DOE! Blame unions! Blame kids! Not the system they must use. It's always the same playbook.

I'm a retired learning disabilities teacher with a linguistics major. I might have something smart to share.

More crucially, teachers could be guides like they can in the Montessori programs.

In Italian & Finland, they ALL can. Their spelling system is systematic, regular.

BTW, the French fixed their unsystematic & irregular system a bit lately & game-changer did NOT force current users to relearn or use the new spellings.

After 1 year of advocacy on X, how many are willing to make this compromise. Everybody wants an easy solution & blame some externals.
