In the last few years we've seen:
- The plot to kidnap Gretchen Whitmer
- The Storming of the Capitol and pipe bombs left at the RNC and DNC
- The break-in to kidnap Nancy Pelosi and the brutal on Paul Pelosi
- Multiple assassination attempts against Trump
- The assassination of Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband and the shooting of on State Senator John Hoffman and his wife
- Luigi Mangione's assassination of Brian Thompson
- The assassination of Charlie Kirk
Political violence is contagious. It is spreading. It is not confined to one side or belief system. It should terrify us all.
The foundation of a free society is the ability to participate in it without fear of violence. Political violence is always an attack against us all. You have to be so blind not to see that.
Dinner with Pope Leo XIV! Aug. 2024. We met to build a relationship and nurture support for the Building Bridges Initiative of PCAL and Loyola Chicago, and he was very encouraging! @CudaEmilce@LoyolaChicago https://t.co/YnPFKZVGYR
The best take on Vance’s bad theology comes from Andrew Sullivan. He captures how the message of Jesus is radical, counterintuitive, and very very difficult.
“And let’s just say that if Vance’s common-sense position had been Jesus’, we would probably never have heard of Him. Family, tribe, and nation were invisible to Jesus. He abandoned his own family and disowned his parents even as a teenager; he violated some of the most sacred teachings of his tribe, and was executed for it; he hailed a despised foreigner, a Samaritan, as more virtuous than a Jewish priest; he urged every disciple to abandon their wives and families and jobs and follow him. He went even further: “If any one comes to me without hating his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.” Let’s just gently conclude that this is not quite the philosophy of MAGA natalists.
Jesus’ radicalism, like Saint Francis’ — perhaps his only true disciple in two millennia — is very, very hard to take. It’s deeply contrary to our human nature. Agape — the Greek word for universal, indiscriminate love of everyone, male or female, Greek or Jew — is the antithesis of Aristotle’s sane realism, and you can see why Aquinas tried to temper it a bit. But Vance’s attempt to co-opt Christ for the cause of mass deportations goes beyond mere theological casuistry. Along with Trump’s claim that God saved him from a bullet to make America great again, it represents a fusion of Christian faith with one political party — Christianism. And that, for any sincere Christian, is not just heretical but sickening.”

🧵I’ve read through the evidence section—the first 85 pages—of Jack Smith filing on Trump’s private criminal efforts to stay in power despite knowing that he’d lost the election.
The evidence is stunning. It’s clear why Trump did not want the public to see this testimony.
13 things jumped out to me on Trump’s attempt to defraud the American people and steal the 2020 election.
As with most things said by MAGA, this is false and intended to divide. I work in the hospital in Springfield and this is 100% false. Leave us alone. You are hurting your own constituents @JDVance
@RickLeeJames At a pub in Ireland somewhere between Galway-Cork, celebrating my FIL's bday (9/11) during his visit to see us. The bartender asks, Have you seen the TV?" 1st plane had just hit. All were compassionately attuned to our experience throughout as Americans in another country.
