As a practicing Internist, I often had patients who used the emergency room unnecessarily. Some were just anxious, while others could have been evaluated at an urgent care or convenient care clinic.
Nurse lines are often used by health plans who want their members to have easy access to this member friendly service. These plans provide their nurse lines with information on community services available to their members.
There has been significant erosion of trust in the provider-patient relationship. Shared Decision Making presents patients with unbiased information and clarifies their concerns. It may be helpful in re-establishing trust in this important relationship.
