Dr Mathebula makes a crucial point: the international protocol is that honourary doctorate recipients cannot ethically use the Dr title. Only the institution that has awarded you that honour (note: honour, not qualification) is allowed to address you as Dr. I think the South African Association of PhDs should lobby for that legislation, in the same way that the Department of Higher Education legislated that only public institutions of higher learning can call themselves “universities” and not private ones.
