10 June 1944. 642 men, women and children were murdered by the German Waffen SS in the village of Oradour-sur-Glane, France. The village was never rebuilt and featured at the opening episode of the classic ITV documentary series World at War.
Just heading off to visit Oradour-sur-Glane for the first time, a location I have wanted to visit for a long time.
‘Down this road on a summer day in 1944, the soldiers came. Nobody lives here now. They stayed only a few hours. When they had gone, the community, which had lived for a thousand years, was dead. This is Oradour-sur-Glane, in France.’
@michaelastracha@ChrisGPackham A very special partnership as educators and as promoters of our UK wildlife. Gifted to us and now always part of our culture. Long may it continue! Love & peace to you both x [my photo of Red Kite over fells, nr Kendal]
@PompeyPedro High brow= landscaped park outdoor space with permanent amphitheatre seating (for small music venue/display/theatre), with waterbus/taxi stop. Otherwise (as mentioned) a massive 'Colossus of Rhodes' Terry Devlin Statue....PUP :D
It's nearly Candlemas, traditionally the very end of the Christmas season, which joins a last look back to midwinter with the first glimmer of spring. Time for a few more medieval carols: https://t.co/21dRZ4hjSc

Sorrow is past and joy doth renew.'

'Though men be merry in mind when they have much drunk,
A year runs full swift, and yields never the same again;
The first part and the finish fit seldom together.'

This is probably the oldest surviving Nativity. 4th/5th century. Carved in marble and on show in Athens. Note the absence of Mary and Joseph. Just the ox and the ass in attendance. Interesting how priorities change in religions art. I deal with it here. https://t.co/aUU90N0CAS
Downs in Winter, Eric Ravilious, 1935. A classic view of the Southdowns in East #Sussex (now @sdnpa). The original artwork is in the collection of @TownerGallery.
The algorithms are making it a lot harder to spread the word about these online talks. Although numbers are still reasonable, it would be a great help if folk were able to give the 30 December event a quick share 🙂
