Remember it was animal welfare/legislation efforts that paved the way for child welfare efforts in America. Acknowledging overlapping risk of harm for children AND pets in domestically violent homes isn’t radical or novel, but rather a return to our roots. https://t.co/BgDzOic2ue
Pet #microchips are amazing but also a potential source of ⬆️ power, & control in #domesticviolence.
Enraged, our abuser reported 🐶 as lost b/c I hid her at a kennel b4 reuniting to flee. I was terrified that he’d know our location or get access 1st if I became separated from🐶

It's important to be comfortable with other ppl's pain. It's a strength to be able to sit with someone in agony, and just be there without the need to "say the right thing" bc there truly isn't anything to say except "I'm so sorry this happened."
When your #dog suddenly limps for 30 secs:
Whole day’s schedule- cleared.
Vet-worthy? Extra cookies. Carrying her everywhere. Neurotically checking her paw & leg. Ensure a calm presence. Belly rubs. Singing & cooing.
5 mins later, 🐶runs to play.
Hi, helicopter dogmom here!🙋🏽♀️
Just looking out the window w/ my favorite ball, practicing #mindfulness, focusing on noticing impulses that- when acted upon- never get me closer to what I want. My thoughts constantly interrupted by those f*cking squirrels.

If you’re in a region/situation with an increased rabies risk, be sure to vaccinate your furries, your family, & yourself. Vets, check your titres. Keep away from bats, other wild animals. Seek medical advice if concerned about poss exposure.

She was my girl, my children's first best friend, she was also a victim of DV, she cowered on the couch with me, shook with fear too, cried with me and licked my tears away, she also provided my children with comfort. DV shelters need to accept pets.
@RhondaJFlanagan I’m sorry for what you’ve gone through & the fact that you’re in so much pain, Rhonda. The sudden forced absence of pets can take such an ongoing emotional toll on those who love them.
If you find yourself in this position:
1) A few #domesticviolence shelters now permit #pets. Others might connect you w/ FREE pet-fostering vets/orgs.
2) Can’t take them? It feels unbearable, but get yourself to #safety 1st. Their welfare can come next.
IT’S NOT YOUR FAULT.
“I got the courage to leave for the sake of my son, but we couldn’t bring our dog. I couldn’t sleep in the DV shelter, couldn’t focus on recovery...he’d said he’d kill our dog if I left...and he did.” Pets ARE family and MUST be included in safety plans. https://t.co/BgDzOic2ue
Highest concentration of animal control reports on top and domestic violence reports below the FOLLOWING YEAR. With abusers often using harm to animals to delay DV reporting might working with Animal Control provide opportunity to intervene 1 year earlier? https://t.co/BgDzOic2ue
The world is READY FOR CHANGE. The 1st study to utilize reports from scene to quantify risk in homes where DV and Pet Abuse co-occur already ranked in top 1% of all studies ever tracked by Almetric. Keep sharing, more to reach! #ProtectPets#ProtectPeople. https://t.co/BgDzOic2ue
I'd be outside crying, overwhelmed, & depressed. He’d lick my tears as I cried, then sit out in front of me at attention as if standing guard and letting me know “he had things covered” while I took a moment. Kids in homes impacted by violence NEED their pets. #ShelterPetsToo
