PhDs get amazing jobs outside academia all the time. PhDs also experience years of struggle & frustration when it comes to getting a meaningful career going. Both are true and a lot is going on here.

@ScienceIsMetal Really nail down your transition from one slide to the other. When you get the transitions right, the story you’re telling feels natural and the audience can better follow along.
My secret weapon is a summarizing point at the bottom of each slide that expands upon the title.
@upulie During my grad school interviews, the current students took us perspective students out for sushi. They heard that my undergrad work was on sea urchin development… They ordered me a massive piece of urchin sushi.
I tried it and really DID NOT enjoy it.
I had the honor to be selected as a #GradFUTURES Trailblazer Beyond the Tenure Track. Thank you for the opportunity to talk about my experiences in grad school and industry #withaphd
Been working on a few different projects. Would love any feedback on this content format! I’m aiming for shorter, with fewer “ums”… my public speaking has slid over the last couple of years. #gradschool#phdchat

Dear PhD students, When doubting yourself, take a step back & see the big picture of what you are trying to accomplish. You are finding answers to questions that haven’t been asked before. You are contributing to science, & that’s simply amazing. @OpenAcademics@AcademicChatter
@Eliza_Sweeney_@PhDVoice@PhDForum@Momademia I generally recommend keeping a thoughts/ideas journal to keep track of the evolution of your thesis throughout. But writing the thesis itself will definitely vary. It takes self awareness.
@silvascientist@hwahl16 Respectfully disagree. Every interview I went on explicitly asked about prior research experience and assessed my expectations of lab life. I don’t think I met gras students in biology/biomed who did NOT have some sort of prior research work.
the outpouring love & support I’ve received has made me realize I’m more than my accomplishments and gymnastics which I never truly believed before. 🤍
@IAmShereeMartin @jenheemstra@cspenn I understand the reasoning behind your question, which is definitely valid. But I (a man) wish my mentors consistently asked this question!
Yesterday, I was offered an exciting opportunity and when I emailed my PhD mentor to let him know, he said congratulations and then asked:
What will you take off your plate so they get the best you?
Wow. Great mentors ask the tough questions that you need to hear.
