Don’t look away.
This was a Tapanuli orangutan, the world’s rarest great ape.
Its decayed body was recently found among logging debris and mud, a consequence of extreme weather exacerbated by large-scale deforestation in North Sumatra. Up to 54 members of its family might also have been killed.

@PhilCatDev Tragic Sumatra event. Mudslides in mountainous areas where deforestation occurs seem so much more severe than in Kalimantan swamps where we work. Deforestation everywhere has severe&dangerous consequences &needs to be stopped. I weep&pray for the innocent #orangutans of Tapanuli

I said it before & have been saying it for years: “Trees are our lifeline to the future.”
OFI & I have planted 100s of 1,000s of native trees in Central Kalimantan (#Borneo)to restore #orangutan habitat & mitigate climate change.Ultimately,people need trees as much as orangutans!
