Five small changes most churches could make on Sundays that would make a surprising difference:

1. At most, make one announcement. Leaders think they have to announce everything so that people will know about it and participate. But instead, they end up overwhelmed and bored. Better to pick one thing, tell a compelling story, and offer a clear call-to-action.

2. Stand for the Scripture reading. We are physical beings who worship with our bodies. Standing for the Scripture reading increases our attention and is a physical picture of reverence for God's word.

3. Take communion every week. I'm always amazed how few churches do this. The concern is that it would get rote, but my experience has been exactly opposite. What better to focus on every week than the gospel? (And, by the way, most churches take an offering every week and aren't concerned about that getting rote)

4. Incorporate some other elements. Recite one of the creeds, sing a song of lament over the congregation, do an interview of somebody's testimony, pray a responsive prayer, send them out with a benediction. Don't have to do all these every week, but mixing them in helps engage different people in fresh ways.

5. Have everyone who speaks into a microphone introduce themselves. This simple, hospitable, and does wonders to make the church feel more welcoming.
