In arguments between people who speak multiple languages and those who speak only one, I almost always find that the polyglots have reason on their side.
@random_walker@ylecun 2022-2025, NIST hosted an online "AI metrology" colloquium that drew 70+ attendees and hosted talks from researchers in industry and academia (Google, Princeton, etc.). Since mid-Feb., it just stopped. Another good thing broken. https://t.co/f8Cht024TD
This is absolutely ridiculous. And it is what happens when you judge a program in 15 seconds with zero content knowledge based on a description in a single database.
This is not government reform.
At bluesky there is excellent, moment to moment reporting on the cruel, incompetent and dangerous actions of X's president Elon Musk. But you won't find that here. X is dead imo https://t.co/KK7T1ixoJs
@Simpson4Ab3@jonatanpallesen@elonmusk@CommunityNotes Intended to @elonmusk with the associated audience.
Incidentally, I'm all in favor of reducing the maximum overhead rate ... But this much in 5 days? It's ridiculous. It will lead to trials ruined, medicines spoiling, and uncountable inefficiencies via scrambling and panic.
@Simpson4Ab3@jonatanpallesen@elonmusk@CommunityNotes 1. Not all of the receiving universities have 10s of billions in endowments. Maybe only apply the 15% to those that do? Oh no, that would be equity.
2. Your math is wrong, as your sometime ally @jonatanpallesen notes
3. How the hell are you in charge of anything in this area?
@PhilOutsider@KelseyTuoc Some of their funding supports medicine and food; some supports projects furthering American interests and values; and undoubtedly there is some corruption. But is suddenly stopping all of it the best response? It's callous about the lives the good programs are saving.
@PhilOutsider@KelseyTuoc What percentage of USAID do you think funds gay operas compared to medicine and food for children? Whatever disagreements you have with gay operas and the like, is stopping them worth the cost in human lives that results from suddenly interrupting ALL of its programs?
It also basically makes it impossible to restart programs that are determined to be serving American interests and priorities once this has been determined - you broke all the leases, fired all the people, and have to start from scratch.
@tenshi_anna The Valley Forge Casino Resort used to offer $10 day passes to their pool in the summer, complete with tiny fake beach and sometimes a DJ. Luxury even a Philadelphia grad student could afford.
@elonmusk Since you're a science and engineering guy: Wouldn't it make sense to give us a cost-benefit analysis for USAID before destroying it? What balanced, evidence-based reasoning should convince us that it is a net loss rather than gain?
