Our team this week welcomed Prisons Minister @JamesTCobbler to our Women’s Hub in Stockton 🤝

The team highlighted the great work they carry out in partnership with the Probation Service to support women within the Criminal Justice System, and discussed the challenges we face and hope that the Government will address.

Yesterday it was great to have @SamJRushworth visit two of our projects in County Durham.

The first being Hedley House which provides safe and secure accommodation to young people aged 16-21 who are experiencing homelessness and secondly The Fells just outside of Durham City Centre supports adult males.

I'll give Labour the benefit of the doubt as they have only been in government for a month, but we do need to see more to address homelessness than housebuilding. Although a good long-term response, it will take time to build enough houses - what are we doing in the meantime?

117,450 households were living in temporary accommodation on 31 March 2024, an increase of 12.3% since last year.

The police and wider criminal justice system are rightfully taking a firm response to the acts of violence and racial hatred we have seen. It does not serve anyone in society if all of these people are released from prison into homelessness.

Social housing shouldn't be a reward for good behaviour. Everyone has a right to housing, and with rights comes duties on others to meet those rights, including providing affordable housing. Our criminal justice system is responsible for justice, our housing system is not.

Earlier this week we were delighted to officially announce that the ASE Partnership formally known as STAGE had been successfully funded for the next 3 years through @TNLComFund, the largest community funder in the UK.

We wanted to bring attention to the alarming statistic that 73% of women supported by the ASE Partnership first experienced exploitation in adulthood yet government policy has focused overwhelmingly on child sexual exploitation (CSE).

A statutory definition will not in itself change anything but is the necessary foundation for many other changes we want to see, including improved data collection. Without this data, we can never expect to see ASE identified as a policing priority.

Police chiefs describe VAWG as a "national emergency". Really concerning to see that the average of perpetrators is going down so we can't expect to eventually age out of the misogynistic attitudes behind many VAWG crimes. 🧵

🧵Our national policing statement published today has outlined the scale of the threat posed by violence against women and girls (VAWG), with 3,000 offences recorded every day in England and Wales, accounting for 20% of all police recorded crime.

That is why, as a first step, we have been calling for the government to introduce a statutory definition of ASE and guidance specifically addressing this form of VAWG. Currently it's only addressed in modern slavery guidance and frankly it's a bit difficult to process.
