Military history, esp #WW2, tanks, defences, & artillery. Researching my relatives in WW1 & WW2. Writer & interviewer. Facebook: Phil Loder's Military Page.
Spotted this #WW1 war memorial in All Saints, North Moreton nr Didcot. Lots on there: professional soldiers, first day of the Somme (& later days), Delville Wood, the AIF (Australian Imperial Force?), an RAF accident at Netheravon, Battle of the Piave & a POW. @Britwarmemorial
Tuesday Tank: the Vickers Light Tank Mk VIB at the @TankMuseum. It was the first tank to be built in large numbers as Britain geared up for #WW2. The tank had a crew of 3 and was powered by a Meadows 4.4L 6-cyl petrol engine. @Burntime0101@milmodelscene@USAS_WW1#TankTuesday
Just a month to go before the @TankMuseum's โThe Tanks Have Done Marvelsโ seminar on Saturday 21 November. Looking forward to seeing everyone and hearing from the speakers. For more information, head to https://t.co/qrfOI78IUB #WW1
This is WN 48 MKB Longues-sur-Mer, Normandy and the M262 bunker for Fire Control. I haven't been here in years & the entrance to the M262 has been fenced off for a long time, but as luck would have it the fence was under repair & I was able to have an exquisite visit inside #WW2
@NEILNeilwhit@britainatwar Hi, yes, thatโs him. Good to be in touch. I probably wouldnโt go, but I know his sons have been to the Baltic to see where their father was injured.
Great to see my article on HMS Dragon & my great uncle who served on her, in the latest @britainatwar. He joined the RN as a cadet in 1913, but was injured in action in the Baltic in 1919 during the Russian Civil War. He became a priest & was a chaplain in WW2. Pic: SubLt in 1919
I left battleships, cruisers and destroyers behind with this #WW2 memoir from a wireless operator on motor gun boats in the North Sea & the Aegean, 1943-45. Very interesting to hear how the small boats operated, plus accounts of battles off East Anglia & among the Greek islands.
Tuesday Tank: here's Chieftain 'Ruff 'n' Ready' pausing for a moment on one of the mounds at Operation Market Harborough - not one of my best photos there and not the shot I was aiming for, but captures the fun of the day! @Burntime0101@milmodelscene@USAS_WW1#TankTuesday
Continuing reading about the Royal Navy in the Mediterranean in #WW2 with Max Hastingsโ โOperation Pedestalโ (2021). Especially interested as my great uncle was gunnery officer on HMS Nelson, which was with the convoy for the first part from Gibraltar. Fascinating book! #books
@PDC_Services I admit that I havenโt read one before, but very impressed. I love delving into the reference list to see where quotes etc have come from. Very interesting to have the Italian and German eyewitness accounts too.
