This is a deeply stupid and embarrassing clip for a number of reasons but the one's I'm going to focus on are primarily that Yglesias is deeply incapable of engaging the actual substance behind his opponents claims, as well as empirical reality.

The primary criticism people have over the Gaza genocide is not that Israel is fighting a war but, that it has relentlessly targeted civilian populations, has engaged in countless war crimes against the Palestinian people with no consequences for those who've perpetuated them, has purposefully destroyed civilian infrastructure, and has generally broken every ceasefire agreement put on the table. And in doing so, they've made it quite clear that they're entirely uninterested in stopping and have very loudly said that they would like to take over the entire region and remove the civilian population.

Hamas absolutely started the war, and they're a horrible, repressive far-right government. But the idea that they're some insane death cult that's interested in going down to the last man, when they both proposed and accepted multiple ceasefires is wrong, and deeply stupid. The fact that Demsas is seemingly incapable of pushing back against this is somehow almost as embarrassing.

I’m pleased the Pennsylvania Supreme Court decided that skill games are slot machines. They should not be easily accessible in neighborhoods that already face high rates of poverty, crime and violence.

You only find them concentrated in our most vulnerable communities. You won’t find these kinds of stores – stop and gos, smoke shops – and these slot machines – in wealthy neighborhoods. They aren’t there. 

It’s predatory, and it’s not right.  

As Mayor, I don’t have the luxury of turning a blind eye to ills like street homelessness, the opioid crisis, or our housing and affordability crisis.  

This kind of predatory activity only exacerbates seemingly intractable problems that we are challenged with solving. And no one has come running to save our City with the revenue it needs to address these systemic issues. 

I’m going to be watching this issue very carefully. In no way, shape or form do I think these slot machines should be in our neighborhoods already struggling from socio-economic and public safety issues. If they are going to go anywhere, they should be in private clubs and casinos.

They should not be accessible to our children or in our most vulnerable communities. I am lifting my voice in opposition, and I am not going away.

🚨 Update: This is an objectively good move by City Committee to not let this BS stand and send it to the contest committee. I’m going to do the very dumb thing™ and stick my neck out say this green shoots of a new leaf for Bob Brady and City Committee’s relationship with progressives and leftist challengers.

For them, the writing’s on the wall: The same progressive wave that won Chris Rabb his Congressional seat absolutely carried through to Ward elections. The number of open wards continue to grow and if the 5th splits into A&B there can be even more.

I think there’s a base understanding that the continued animosity between City Committee and progressives and leftists is unproductive and unsustainable if we’re going to turn out Philly in 2028.

On Bob Brady: I’m glad he announced that he’s retiring after this term or sooner. Should it have been before now? Maybe… but dear reader, if think it was going to be anyone even a skosh left of center dem you’re absolutely kidding yourself.

Brady recently said in an interview with @Laurenjmayk that he’s going to work with progressives and the evidence so far points to that fact.

In the ward leader turnover fights that have transpired, I haven’t heard of any funny business outside of the Cindy Bass debacle, which can’t be attributed to Bob. In fact, I’ve heard city committee asked to provide Cindy for a lawyer to monitor that meeting and she turned it down.

Look, I know for a fact that there’s whole lot of progressives and leftists that have considerable beef with Bob Brady and City Committee. I’ve written a whole ass op-Ed for the Inquirer and aired my own shit publicly.

So for this *current iteration* of City Committee goes and what it becomes I’m going to trust, but verify. I’m ready for them to wow me with who they select for chairs and how they conduct business moving forward.

Lastly, lemmie piss off everyone with this thread- upon reflection I think that TikTok stunt that Larry pulled outside of City Committee was strategically moronic.

It actually killed any forward progress to finding a consensus replacement for Brady this term and only exacerbated the potential for a flame war. I think Larry sometimes needs enemies for relevancy and attention & it’s annoying.
