جندي مشاة بحرية أمريكي ميت وهو يحمل سكينًا في يده وعلى بعد خطوات يوجد جندي ياباني مقتول لربما كان هناك تشابك بالايادي بينهما وذلك خلال غزو القوات الامريكية على جزيرة إنجيبي في أتول إنيويتوك ، حيث أنشأ اليابانيون مطارًا في الجزيرة واستخدموه كنقطة ��وقف لتزويد الطائرات بالوقود اثناء تنقلها بين الجزر المجاورة ولم تكن الجزيرة مزودة إلا بتحصينات رمزية ( فبراير 1944 )

بعد ان سقطت جزر جيلبرت في يد الجيش الامريكي كلف الجيش الإمبراطوري الياباني اللواء البرمائي الأول المُشكّل من حامية كانت متمركزة سابقًا في منشوريا ( شمال شرق الصين حالياً ) بالدفاع عن الجزيرة ، ووصل اللواء بقوه قدرتها 2586 جندي في ( 4 يناير 1944 ) مدعومين بأفراد من سلاح الجو وموظفين مدنيين وعمال ، ومع ذلك لم يتمكنوا من إكمال التحصينات قبل الهجوم الأمريكي في فبراير ، الذين استطاعو الاستيلاء على الجزيرة في عملية برمائية استمرت خمسة أيام ، ليصبح مرسى الجزيرة قاعدة تابعة للبحرية الأمريكية ليبلغ متوسط ​​عدد السفن الموجودة يوميًا خلال النصف الأول من ( يوليو 1944 ) نحو 488 سفينة، ��ينما بلغ خلال النصف الثاني من الشهر نفسه نحو 283 سفينة .

横浜沖で行われた大演習観艦式での空母「加賀」、戦艦「比叡」、「長門」

Tugs pushing and pulling the fully loaded USS Missouri during one of four unsuccessful attempts to free the battleship after she ran aground on Thimble Shoals, Virginia, on January 17th 1950. Missouri was finally freed on February 1st after dredging alongside and astern opened a path for her to return to the shipping channel. No one was injured, but the battleship remained stuck before being freed from the sand. The ship was so damaged that she had to return to port and enter dry dock for repairs.

A naval court found Captain William D. Brown and other officers guilty of negligence. Brown was moved down 250 places on the promotion list, effectively ending his naval career
