DON’T SET YOURSELF UP

“Lady, avoid visiting a man’s house alone.”
“Man, avoid being alone with a lady.”
Even “Avoid late-night calls with the opposite sex.”

These may sound old-fashioned to some, but they are godly principles of wisdom.

In courtship counseling sessions, couples are often advised not to be alone together. These are not rules meant to kill romance, they are safeguards meant to protect purity. The goal is to avoid fornication, not to imply distrust.

It’s not always about who’s “stronger” or “weaker.” In moments of temptation, anyone can be vulnerable (or you think there won’t be moments of temptation?). These cautions are not attacks on your self-control; they’re reminders of our natural human tendencies.

The most dangerous lie to believe is that you are too strong to fall.
Or that the person you’re with will always be the strong one.

“We should be able to sleep on the same bed and nothing will happen.”
Really? That’s not being spiritual.
That’s not being wise.
That’s being naïve.
That’s setting yourself up.
That’s playing with fire.

Yes, the church should teach men discipline and self-control.
But that doesn’t cancel the call to be vigilant and watchful.
Scripture says, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.” (1 Peter 5:8)

Don’t set yourself up for what you’re praying to avoid.
Wisdom doesn’t wait for trouble, it walks away before trouble begins.

And to be clear, this is not to discredit or blame victims of sexual assauIt.
This is a call for us to value wisdom and self-awareness above pride or assumption.
It’s about taking responsibility for what we can control, and learning to walk with discernment in a world that tests our boundaries daily.

Don’t set yourself up.
