I know I am getting old but ... just watched a cracking finish to the SA-Australia Test which has been entertaining for the last three days and which I will remember for some time. Turned over to the SL-England ODI which the commentators treat as if it is an epic sporting encounter. Yet to me it seems a bore where the balance between bat and ball is totally out of kilter ... surely cricket is more than thumping endless fours and sixes? (Marco Longari)
This snap could be of anyone, anywhere. But it's Denis Compton bowling to author Dennis Castle, Cecil Hotel, Delhi, 1945. Behind the tree/wicket is Newcastle, Middlesborough, and England outside-right, Ralph Birkett
@MICHAEL37404563@KALHolman At times you are right. But at other times draws can be more exciting than a one-sided win. That's the essence of red-ball cricket
@PhilBrown1956 Fair point, not doctored in the sense of favouring a side so much as they neuter the bowlers who become little more than mechanisms to provide the next boundary hit
@uniquesupri Not at all. Test cricket could be - and can be - boring. It's far from perfect but it's not manufactured and sold to be woefully one-sided in favour of batting and sixes
England captain Bob Willis at Lord's shortly before flying out to Australia for the Ashes, October 13th 1982. Willis took 18 wickets at 27.00 but England lost the series - and so the Ashes which they had held since 1977 - 2-1
@simonutr Not a clue what that got to do with the discussion. If it had been about attendances I could understand. And since you brought it up, banks of empty seats at the ODI
@Leginb I am pleased if you enjoyed it (seriously) but there's more about the game than records. It needs balance - same as Tests on dead pitches are no fun - and this was just a succession of hits and slogs
@binghach Post match the broadcasters will be in a frenzy about what a classic game of cricket this was. And within a day few other than Brook and is family will remember it.
Cannot recommend highly enough this four-part podcast in which @NHoultCricket interviews Geoff Boycott at some length. Great insights into his career both on and off the pitch
