Not that it isn’t important, but I am seriously questioning why Afrobeats and Caribbean party arguments are dominating Juneteenth discourse *on here* and not the ongoing forced prison labor in Texas (a vestige of chattel slavery), continued imprisonment of Black political prisoners, and the fact that our federal government is attacking reparations initiatives.
The algorithms are amplifying and driving antagonistic discourse, and suppressing the Black Radical Tradition in real time. It has too many of us thinking that the greatest threat to Juneteenth is Black cross cultural celebrations and not the historical erasure, corporate white washing, and continued enslavement of African Americans.
Additionally, since it became a federal holiday if we’re not careful, in 50 yrs Juneteenth will be the next Memorial Day, completely absorbed into Americana imagery, void of Black Radical thought, void of Black liberation advocacy - with vague references to slavery and Texas - and little to no references to other African American emancipation days while enslavement through the prison industrial complex continues.
One of those Black assistants who had the resume but never got the promotion. Arguably his repeated failure to get that call-up helped to spur the Rooney Rule.
The 119th Congress has more Black members than at any point in American history.
Louisiana Rep. Cleo Fields says, “It's progress. But it's not progress for Louisiana. There are people who, in this state and others, just will not vote for a Black person for anything.” https://t.co/LmTXS2LeQw
"There's not a single African American ever elected to congress from Louisiana, from a majority white district, period. You know, people, unfortunately, vote on racial lines. I mean, and the courts in the past have recognized that."
